Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexa Speyer.
Hi Alexa, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Well, I started singing and dancing when I was little. From there, it was somewhat of a traditional route. My parents saw my interest in the arts and wanted to support it. They signed me up for dancing classes singing classes, and then of course eventually, I decided to add acting classes as well. Then it was on to a performing arts high school in Toronto, which is where I grew up. Sure that I wanted to follow a path to acting as a career, I then applied to AMDA College of the Performing Arts, which eventually brought me here to LA where I have been auditioning and working for the last couple of years.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
I think every path has its smooth parts and its bumps along the way. I was lucky to grow up with a really supportive family who have always encouraged me to pursue what I am passionate about. But, realistically, this is a hard industry to get into. It is competitive, a person has to be motivated, and have the self-discipline to keep going. So, yes, I have hit bumps, and there have been struggles, of course roles don’t always come through, however, I try to maintain a good, positive outlook and just keep at it.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
When I am acting, I strive to create honest, authentic, and real characters with whom the audience can connect. I believe that authentic performances offer the audience an opportunity to see multidimensional characters who provoke a full range of emotions, thoughts, and connections with the audience. And for me, that can occur through doing live theatre or being in front of the camera.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
For me, much of my identity was formed through the connection I made with characters I saw on stage. By watching stories play out in front of me, I’ve learned about compassion, love, hardship, and strength. When I really think about it, it all started when I was a toddler; I sang and danced wherever I went – whether that was at home, at school, or on an airport runway during a three-hour plane delay – because, yes, that really did happen! Eventually, I found myself singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star into my hairbrush to my parents and even later – performing Barbra Streisand songs to crowds with hundreds of people. It’s pretty cool to think that the little toddler giving a performance during a her plane delay was planting the seeds to what is now becoming a lifelong career in the arts.
