Rising Stars: Meet Africa Jett of Fullerton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Africa Jett

Hi Africa, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
i got my first guitar at age 15..i cried for three days to mom and she finally gave in and bought it for me

I started playing seriously in China about.15 years ago. i was playing several bands, I managed several expat bands and even started a charity concert that is still going today.

i moved to the US and started my new journey in St Louis. I played in several bands but also recorded my first EP and started my own band

The next step in my music career braught me to LA. In my first year i played in several bands, shot a video and started a new band of my own.

I am currently finishing my 5th EP, lead my own original band and a tribute band, do my own recording, teach guitar and bass and have started a guitar building and repair business.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Playing in a rock band as a girl in China was not tradional back then, many guys did not take me Seriously.

Then when I got.to the US the biggest challenge was to write songs in English, my third language.

The.music scene in St Louis was very friendly, I knew everyone and they all supported eachother. But in LA it is super competitive, especially for female musicians. Some bands just want a tall skinny blond girl and do not.care.about your skills

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a singer songwriter and play guitar and bass and do lead vocals as well.

I have written and recorded five EPs and my style is best summarized as Pink Punk.

Being able to play multiple Instruments, do my own recording, read and.write music in two different languages and build guitars is pretty unique.

I am proud of my recordings, as each one gets better and my sound and skills mature. I am also proud about.the charity concert I started and that is still going today.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
Driving in LA is very scary, too many crazy drivers on the freeway and finding parking is a nightmare.

What I love about LA is the beaches, so many to visit.
