Today we’d like to introduce you to Yizhou Liu.
Hi Yizhou, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m Yizhou Liu, a senior product designer at Yahoo and a freelance designer with a background in industrial design and human-computer interaction. My passion lies in crafting unique interactions with cutting-edge technologies. As a design lead for Yahoo Finance mobile apps, I am focused on spearheading the development of Yahoo Finance apps, as well as creating innovative features for our finance community. My goal is to empower individuals to make smarter investment decisions by providing them with user-friendly, intuitive, and engaging experiences.
My previous work has encompassed various domains, including fintech, AI-powered products, wearable experiences, information visualization, mixed reality, and ubiquitous computing. I have also had the opportunity to design digital product experiences for other esteemed tech companies, such as Google.
I’m also honored with MUSE Creative Award 2023 as well as London Design Award 2023. Also, I was selected as a young jury for the famous design critique platform Awwwards.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
There’re definitely many struggles along the way. For me, a creative design is characterized by an “Aha Moment” – a breakthrough, innovative, and original concept that captures attention and sparks interest. It is that moment when you encounter a design or idea that leaves you awe-inspired and captivated. I’ve faced a lot of challenges when trying to seek for ‘Aha Moments’ in my designs, such as lack of inspiration, communication with stakeholders, new technologies, highly-competitive markets, etc.
What matters most to you?
Fun. Fun is a vital aspect of life and should not be underestimated or dismissed as unimportant. As a designer, infusing fun into your creations can have a significant impact on people’s lives, making their daily experiences more enjoyable and fulfilling.
