Today we’d like to introduce you to Alissa Krumlauf.
Alissa, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I loved capturing friends on film and would always aim for the “America’s Next Top Model” look. In college, I produced my own fashion shoots and majored in Photography. After graduation, I moved out to LA. I am now an agent for photographers, as well as a producer. I also do my own projects on the side in hopes to one day go full time as a fashion photographer and all that it entails.
Has it been a smooth road?
Definitely not. I had a multitude of free internships, jobs that chose not to pay, and many flakes along the way. I feel it has all helped to prepare me for what I face now, and am more than able to handle any situation.
What’s your outlook for the industry over the next 5-10 years?
There is already a big shift happening with the digital age. We are losing the value of prints and magazines. Also, with EVERYONE being a photographer / hairstylist / mua, you can always find someone who will do a job for free. It makes it way harder to make any money, let alone at the value you are worth.
What has been the primary challenge you’ve faced?
The biggest challenge I’ve had is making enough money to stay out in LA. I’m good now, but I was working 12 jobs at one time (all part time and some only happened once in a great while…but still).
It is expensive to live and do what you love – but that’s why we are all out here fighting!
What advice do you wish to give to those thinking about pursuing a path similar to yours?
Don’t give up. It takes a lot of work. Make friends in the industry – help each other out!
