Meet West LA Makeup & Hairstylist: Yasmein Abdulla

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yasmein Abdulla.

Yasmein knew at the ripe young age of 8 that she wanted to become a beautician.

“I’m very passionate about my “job” which I don’t even consider it as work because it’s what I absolutely love to do! I love making people feel beautiful from the inside by looking their best from the outside. It’s always been a dream of mine to become known across the world.”  She further joked about taking over the world saying “hey you never know – I’m very determined.”

She attended the Continental School of Beauty in ’98 and graduated in ’99. She started as a hair and makeup artist in upstate NY working in a few different salons and at MAC cosmetics. In 2003 she moved to California to live with her sister and further her craft. “I really wanted to gain more experience but I knew I couldn’t live in LA on my own and do that with no money and no experience. So in late 2004 I moved back to NY. I continued to expand my knowledge by watching the work of the best in the industry. I pushed harder by asking alot of questions, networking, going the extra mile to get more experience – fromtraveling to NYC for Fashion Week and seminars toflying to Chicago for The Food Network, Toronto and Las Vegas for classes.

She also would volunteer her services for exposure and experience for runway shows & photo shoots. To start, her goals were to do brides and to increase the amount of weddings she did in a year, every year. “Last year was my record breaking year which was closed out at 80 bridal parties,” she cheerfully shared.

“Then I eventually was so sought out in upstate NY that I was flown to numerous states and countries to do hair and makeup. My work became published in local and national magazines. I did a few celebrities while they were in town for concerts and filming. By year 2014 I was adamant in moving so I set my goal to be on the west coast by fall 2015. So in November 2015 i stayed with a good friend in Las Vegas and traveled back and forth to LA until I got myself exposed enough to afford my own place. Thanks to The Glam App for seeing my skills and providing enough work with their high profile clients for me to get myself established.”

Now shes based in the Greater Los Angeles area as professional makeup artist and hair stylist specializing in the fields of commercial, editorial, celebrity appearances, film, runway, TV, red carpet events, weddings, music videos, catwalk, fashion photographers on high-profile ad campaigns and private events. “Thanks to the Internet and social media I can get my work and name out faster, more efficiently and get more exposure.”

To be sure, her road to success hasn’t been smooth.  She lost a brother when he was just 28.  She was in a car accident that resulted in injuries that kept her out of work for over a year.  However, with each tragedy she somehow found the strength to keep going, to not give up, to dream bigger – and each time she succeeded.  Her story is the story of LA – a city of wonders – not because of monuments but because of the stories of the people that fill our city with life.
