Today we’d like to introduce you to Vivi Rosenberg.
Hi Vivi, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I had just arrived back in Los Angeles after deciding to leave a career in law. I decided to turn my loft into a design showroom where I created fantastical spaces out of vintage furniture pieces that I would hunt down all around the city. I listed the items for sale and also opened up the shop for people to wander around, sip on wine and purchase furniture, artwork and plants. I moved my furniture to a workshop down in Orange County and transitioned to designing vibey spaces so that people could have the feel of a boutique hotel in their home and workspaces.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Absolutely not a smooth road. Nothing smooth about this road. The whole journey was filled to the brim with mistakes and back-breaking labor and trying to come up with resourceful solutions for every step. Climbing through dumpsters or going to dodgy places at all hours to negotiate and haggle for deals. Trying to learn and master how to refinish furniture and absolutely ruining pieces in the beginning. Transporting truckloads of furniture. Some months the bank account was just so low – it was terrifying. Working to do all of this was full of imbalances in life that took a toll on me the hard way. At one point, I struggled with a severe adderall addiction to cope with it all. This eventually lead to a whole breakdown and intervention. A powerful learning experience and learning curve – testing my wits about me and also my ability to overcome and break out of toxic work-life balance and addictions. In that time, there was a lot of damage to my relationships and the isolation created a type of loneliness that had seeped deep into my soul and took time to repair.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I believe mental health is tied to being present and so much of our lives deserve to be in the present. Through my work in making fantastical spaces – it brings a daily happiness to one’s life. You get to be transported to beautiful spaces in every room. More than that, I believe in the circular economy. To create out of what we already have. There was a greater craftsmanship to manufactured goods made during a certain time. That beauty and authenticity can be felt in the space. On top of that – the use of newly manufactured low-quality goods is part of the plight of our environmental situation due to overconsumption and the consequential waste as a result. I just felt strongly that I wanted to be part of something that made people feel what an intentional space could feel like. To make beautiful out of things that others might consider trash.
