Today we’d like to introduce you to Victoria Scott.
Hi Victoria, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
Alfonso and I met at The Cat Club on Sunset Strip in Hollywood. He was visiting from Spain where he was head recording engineer at Estudios Tabalet in Valencia. I gave him my card which said ‘Victoria Scott, Singer-Songwriter’. He told me it was the first time he’d received a business card with this profession on it.
We immediately hit it off and though Alfonso hadn’t written music in a while since becoming a recording engineer, we started hanging out and writing together. Our first album, ‘My Favorite Word is Today’ is the result of those first writing sessions.
After playing live together in Los Angeles, Albacete and Valencia in Spain, as well as London we decided we really liked creating music together and so we wrote an EP called, ‘In Between’ and then another full-length album called ‘Come on!’ which we also played live in the US, Mexico and Spain. Songs from ‘Come on!’ received extensive airplay in Spain, notably on Radio Tres with DJ Santiago Alcanda and on American College Radio.
During the time that we were promoting and performing ‘Come on!’ we started writing new songs. Then Covid Lock Down happened! As soon as the lockdown started, we decided we would play once a week live from our Facebook page to cheer all our friends and fans up around the world. We had never played to friends in Spain, England and the US simultaneously before so, this was just a thrill for us and it has become such a highlight in our memories of this time.
We also recorded and released a new song every six weeks including a music video! It was quite a prolific time for us. I guess we really felt galvanized about how important it was to stay connected during that time and entertain people so everyone could relax up against all odds.
Those songs resulted in an album called ‘Invincible’ which we released in October 2021 live at Corazon Performing Arts in Topanga Canyon in October 2021. We have received airplay with these songs on 88.5 FM on Bob Goodman’s terrific show ‘Whole Nuther Thing’ as well as Byron Gonzalez’s show ‘Bilingual Sounds’ also on 88.5 FM and on Out of the Woods Radio’ with Jon ‘Chip’ Colcord as well as our first song in Spanish being included on Byron Gonzalez’s World Cafe playlist he curates for NPR on Spotify.
We are a grassroots organization of two, with mighty fans and we feel really grateful that we have received the support that we have.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Well as Shakespeare famously said ‘To be or not to be is the question, and as far as I’m concerned it’s always the question. You either choose to do it or you don’t. I don’t think the road is ever easy in the sense that it takes tenacity and vigor to do anything worthwhile. For us as an Indie band without a label, the struggle is competing with bands that do have all that. It can be overwhelming sometimes and you want to quit and then just when were going to quit, we get invited to play a guest spot at The Hotel Cafe, and it’s a terrific night of music, or Bob Goodmans messages you that he’s going to play your song, all those moments keep us going. We’d really like to work with a label and a booking agent at this point because it feels like the right moment. We’ve done all the digging work and it feels like we are about to take off.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
We, The Blue Dolphins, are a Roots Pop/Rock band based out of the Santa Monica Mountains outside of Los Angeles. We are known for being authentic, having a lot of hearts and a unique Folk, Pop and Roots Rock sound. Alfonso who now has four grammy’s as a recording engineer produces our music with beautiful melodies, harmonies and an uplifting positive vibe which has a timeless quality and laid-back charm to it. I feel proud that we have had recognition from some excellent music curators and that we have a really loyal fan base. You can find out more about us at thebluedolphins.net and join our mailing list mail@thebluedolphins.net. Thank you!
Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
For anybody that is starting out as a band, I would say read a good music business book like Ari Herstand’s ‘How To Make It in the New Music Business’. If you manage your business as well as your craft, it means you get to keep on doing it. It’s not rocket science after all. Create the groundbreaking song but remember to sell some t-shirts at your live shows too.
