Today we’d like to introduce you to Veta Horwitz.
Veta, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started my artistic career in college! I went to fashion design school in New York and learned fashion illustration and the mechanics of sewing… I also learned I loved acting. I got a principal role in “The Vagina Monologues” my senior year and that stuck with me. A couple of years later, I quit my assistant production job at a small fashion company in Chicago and googled “how to become an actor”. LOL. Yep. I did that. A year and a half later, after booking smalls roles in movies and SAG Union Commercials, I decided to move to LALA LAND and truly give it a go!
I started off with a bang, booking 33 independent and union acting jobs in LA my first year!! In the first five months, I did not have a car and I spent SO MUCH money on share rides… yikes. I finally got representation after a couple of months and started to really love the acting industry. I never booked a TV role, not once, only indie film lead roles and commercials. I kept my day job, and I still have it (thank God-the pandemic). During the isolation of this quarantine, I reconnected with my true artist within and created a brand called “Distorted Beauties”. This collection is of portraits and caricatures of the like of friends, animals, family, and of course… famous people.
I also print art on clothing. I am very proud of my artistic endeavors! Although I may not be supporting myself financially with my art, I have a lot to share, and I have so many outlets. It keeps me going. I recently announced the premiere of my short film that I wrote, produced, and starred in “Un-Dateable Britt,” on the LA Shorts International Film Fest YouTube channel! It will play and compete to win in the comedy category the entire month of October. I also recently rebranded myself. My legal name is Kristine Veta Horwitz, since college, I have used “Kristine Veta” for all of my art… but now I am moving forward with the other half of my name: “Veta Horwitz” It feels more like me.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Financial struggles always! Relationship struggles, both best friends and boyfriends. No major battles with my health. No job loss. Nothing I can complain about besides the paycheck to paycheck, always in debt lifestyle of living in LA. Making my movie made a huge impact financially since I was the EP.
We’d love to hear more about your work.
I act in other people’s projects, I create my own short films, and I draw portraits! My portraits are unique, stylized, and unlike other people’s art! I am so proud of my persistence. LA is a tough town. As an actress… I know for playing a mean girl pretty well but in reality, I can be sweet as pie (I think?)
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
My proudest moment was recently the release of my short film that I wrote, produced, starred in oh and I forgot to mention… edited! Seeing the public response to my film and hearing people say “this is relatable” is EVERYTHING.
