Today we’d like to introduce you to Vernon Scott.
Hi Vernon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. I’ve been a Barber and a Natural Hair Stylist for 30 years. Been coming to LA working with Artists and Actresses for the past 11 years. From Red carpets, videos, photoshoots, movie press junkets, Grammy performances, and Oscars I’ve created iconic looks that redefined the possibilities with expression through hair. Finally moving to LA in November 2019 to continue my career journey through creative direction, educating, and inspiring others.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Success is Not linear. But success is inevitable, the process IS the gift. A few months after moving, the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Being a creative and an entrepreneur the ability to pivot is something I’ve had to master of the years. There was never job security, all I have is what I believe I can create.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am a Hair and Wardrobe Stylist, Photographer, and a Creative Director. I specialize in short hair and wardrobe for both males and females. I’m known for working with Maxwell (11 years) Idris Elba, Robert Glasper, Zayn Malik, Jaden Smith, Cynthia Erivo, and Danai Gurira, amongst so many others. Career highlights for me? I would definitely say the Met gala over four times with different clients, The Grammys with performing artists and the carpet with award winners (I’m the lucky charm lol) Over 15 Magazine covers from ELLE to Women’s Health, and the Oscar’s with Danai Gurira and her iconic hair design. I’m most proud of everything I’ve been Blessed to accomplish. I don’t compare myself to anyone else’s accomplishments, there is only inspiration and mutual respect. GOD IS AMAZING.
What would you say have been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
A primary lesson I’ve learned is the art of conducting business and removing emotion from it. To forever be a student of what you love. Mastering observation. And to always operate with passion, consistency, and discipline.
