Meet Verkeya Holman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Verkeya Holman

Hi Verkeya, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started Verkeya Speaks to create a forum for women to have the hard conversations around various topics such as but not limited to child/infant loss, (in)fertility, chronic illness. Verkeya Speaks has had several in person and online panel discussions as well as video interviews on various subject matters. Prior to the COVID19 pandemic, Verkeya Speaks was in the process of a six weeks young women’s empowerment workshop series. We had about six young women in the group discussing topics around money management and career development. Our current goal is to create a scholarship fund for young women who are seniors in high school. A future goal is to be able to have a grant fund for women who need assistance with (in)fertility treatments.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road at all. There have been moments of great support and other times where it has been difficult to rally the troops as they say. I think the moment where I experienced the most difficulty was getting young women to participate in the workshop series.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a new author. I self-published my first book, Intertwined by Verkeya Lanece. I am proud that I stuck with this process and it has given me several opportunities to speak about some difficult situations. The book is fictional but touches on topics like rape, child/infant loss, grief and loss, intimate partner violence. I hope for the book to be used as a way to get people to have conversations about some difficult topics and heal from some of the wounds life hurls at people.

Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My favorite childhood memory was performing in the nutcracker. It was a great feeling to be on stage.
