Meet Venice Photographer: Michaela

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michaela.

Michaela, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My passion for photography started as a youngster growing up in Washington. Little by little, friends and family saw my photography and asked if I could take their pictures. Then, my friend’s friends wanted their photos taken by me. I started out by taking senior pictures for yearbooks, which eventually transitioned to headshots when I moved to LA. I now mainly specialize in headshots and portrait photography. The majority of my clients are female actors who have been recommended to me by their girlfriends; many of them have expressed feeling empowered and relieved to have a female photographer to shoot their headshots. Some of them have shared they feel safer with a female photographer, and I am happy to provide that safe space for them. It’s also a nice feeling to give actors great quality headshots at an affordable price.

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s all come pretty surprisingly easy! Everything has just sort of fell into place along the way.

What are some of the influences that have played the biggest role in your journey so far?
When I was a young child, my parents encouraged creativity and bought me a small camera. As a tween, they further supported me by buying me a computer for my birthday, which got me started on learning how to digitally process images at a young age. Their encouragement really helped my creativity to blossom.

What kind of work do you look forward to most?
I really love doing headshots, which is what I specialize in. I also enjoy photographing musical acts.

What do you know now that you wish you knew when you were just starting out?
Every twist and turn in the journey has helped me to grow into who I am, so I don’t think I’d change anything. But I have learned to be selective with the number of clients I accept. I used to take any job that came my way, but now I accept fewer projects and have learned to focus on a few clients at a time. It may mean that I’m booked far out, but I end up enjoying the process more. And I also feel it leaves the clients I accept feeling really happy with their photos.
