Today, we’d like to introduce you to Valerie Scott. Valerie was introduced to us by the brilliant and talented Tanya Denise DeFreitas.
Valerie, thank you so much for joining us today. We’d love for you to bring our readers up to speed – can you introduce yourself and share your story?
I can recall at about the age of 6 or 7 I started making clothes for my dolls and teddy bears. I didn’t have a sewing machine, but my mother did. She didn’t sew much but she did enough to either mend, hem pants and skirts, and she made me dresses from time to time. I really wanted to use that sewing machine, but she didn’t feel I was old enough. Therefore, I just used a needle and thread. I got really good with sewing with a needle and thread, and I even made hats for my dolls and teddy bears. As time went on, I was probably around 11 years old, and my father got me a sewing machine. That changed my life!
I had my father take me to the fabric store, where I purchased fabric to make Robes and PJs for my younger brother and sister. I got pretty good in a short length of time, and I purchased patterns, but I soon realized they were awful.
So, I would rework them until I eventually learned to make my own patterns. When I entered High School was already making suits for myself fully lined. I wore one to church and I started receiving compliments about the color and how well it fitted. My father told everyone that I had made my own suit. People were in disbelief and started looking closely. There was another seamstress that pulled me to the side and told me my work was excellent and that if I could customize and Taylor a suit for myself, that I could make suits for anyone. Eventually I was getting orders to make suits and dresses for others, and some were being used in fashions shows. I loved sewing so much sometimes I would stay up late on a school night finishing up orders. As time went on, I was making Ties, Hats, purses, and more. If you could imagine it, I could make it.
I started getting orders for Prom dresses, Bridesmaid Dresses, then I was asked if I could make flowers for weddings, and, if I could decorate and coordinate. I was almost a one stop shop. At 15 1/2 my first job was a shop called Flags By Lynn. I made customized Flags, Banners, Sheets, Quilts, Drapes and more. I worked for the Flag Shop until I was about 20 years old. What I learned over the years of sewing pretty much set me up for success.
Let’s talk about your work and career – what else should we know?
After leaving the Flag Shop I wanted to do something different, but I still kept sewing on the side, making wedding dresses, coordinating wedding and events. I eventually because a School Bus Driver and Trainer. I did that for a few years until I was approached by someone in the office who told me we have an open position for an AP Clerk, and you would be great at it. You need to apply. So, I applied, interviewed and got the position. The position morphed into more and this is where I got my start in AP/AR, Accounting and Human Resources. I never thought about HR, but I feel into my lap and continued on that journey for several years. I currently word in at a large Casino as a Human Resources Business Partner with over 25 years of experience, and I’m retired from over 35 years of sewing, but I still continue to craft and created beautiful items.
So, as we mentioned to our audience earlier, you were introduced to us by Tanya Denise DeFreitas and Love Wins Publishing and we really admire them and what they’ve built. For folks who might not be as familiar, can you tell them a bit about your experience with Love Wins Publishing.
I first met Tanya in via zoom in 2020 as we prepared to discuss with the Author and the C0-Authors about writing the book Life After Divorce the Journey to Being Healed and Whole. During those zoom calls she availed herself to be available to each and every one of us, whenever we needed her. It was just something about her that made me think she such a nice person and so sweet. She had a way of talking to you and helping you think things through and pulling it out of you without telling you exactly what to say.
October 2020, I met Tanya in person at the Life After Divorce the Journey to Being Healed and Whole book release party. I sat next to her at the table, and we just started talking. When I sat next to her, I did not recognize her, and I wasn’t aware she was the Publisher of Love Wins. She was so personable and just so easy to talk too. As the evening progressed, we never ran out of things to talk about, and we laughed at lot. Tanya never came across as if she was better than anyone else. I Loved she was just like us and fit in so well.
Tanya is such an awesome person, and she will give you the shift off her back. We talk all the time, and I call her my sister, which she is for life. I can’t tell you how much she has changed my life for the better. I’m working on my next book which I never saw myself as a writer, but she has encouraged me and keeps encouraging me to push through and get I done. I didn’t know where to start, so she just told me it’s your story act like you are talking to someone and just start typing. Do it every day for at least 30 minutes or more and do it until you are done. If you get stuck call me and we will get through it. I appreciate her so much, because I know she is extremely busy and runs several businesses, but yet she finds time for just lil ole me.
