Today we’d like to introduce you to Tim Molina.
Hi Tim, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’m a Set Design for Screen graduate from the University of the Arts London. I was born in Isabela, Philippines, then lived, studied and worked in England for 12 years before I moved to LA around May of last year. It was either a brave or foolish move coming to the States because I was moving to another new country, new city looking to expand my network and open opportunities for myself. At the same time, I was leaving my friends, my network and forcing myself out of my comfort zone. Since then, I have made new friends and creatives who are equally passionate about filmmaking. I’ve built a new network and worked on a variety of commercials, music videos and feature films in the Art Department as an Art Assistant, Set Dresser, Buyer, Art Coordinator, and other roles. Currently, I’m staffed on a new show earning my union days as I continue to work up the ladder and eventually work as a Production Designer.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
When I moved to LA, I could literally count the people I knew with one hand, which made finding a job in the film industry extremely difficult. My very small network got me onto small projects that were either unpaid or barely at all. This went on for a couple of months as I was starting to lose hope, lose the drive I had to succeed in L.A. I was plagued by the idea of moving back to London because it was an easy option and it would end the struggles I was experiencing. However, giving up was not an option. My parents were immigrants; their work ethic and determination to make things work in the countries they moved to inspired me to do the same. I then continued to apply to every job I could find on Facebook groups, film websites and submitted my resume to as many resources as possible. Rejection and rarely hearing back from employers was something I had to constantly get used to. Although, my luck changed when I got an Art Assistant job on a studio feature film. I showed up on set, met new people, gained new experiences, and allowed myself to learn as much as I can. After that, I was able to add that to my resume and add new skills under my belt. My work schedule became much more stable from that point on, and I’ve been able to expand my network, proceed to where I am today.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I work in the Art Department; whether it is Art Assistant, Prop Master, Buyer, Art Coordinator, Art Director, or Production Designer. We’re in charge of designing the overall look of a production and bringing the director’s vision into life. I currently do not specialize in just one role at the moment as every production calls for different needs, but I’m excited down the line to apply all my expertise into Production Design. Even now from my background, having lived and visited various countries around the world, I’ve been able to work with different cultures and different people. I can adapt; that’s what will be amongst the things that will help me stand out in this industry.
Who else deserves credit in your story?
It’s really my parents and friends that have given me a strong support system. There’s also a few people I’ve worked with that have taught me a lot and has helped me really grow as a person as well as a designer.
