Today we’d like to introduce you to the beautiful Bevie Roberts.
Bevie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started watching YouTube tutorials and playing around with different products and looks when I was in my teens. When it came time for me to find a job, I thought that Sephora would be a really fun starting point for me! I got hired there, and after working there for 3 years, I attended Make Up Designory LA. Since graduating from the Fashion program at MUD, I have relocated to the LA area and have been freelancing since my move, doing work for photoshoots, weddings, short films, red carpet, and various other events.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest struggle for me has definitely been being so far away from home. I moved to LA from Minneapolis two short months ago, and I know very few people here. It can feel a little isolating, but with that being said, I have an amazing support system back home which I am incredibly grateful for. Another challenge for me has been starting from the ground up and getting my name out there. Being a freelance makeup artist is undoubtedly a constant hustle, and you have to figure out how to set yourself apart, especially in a market as saturated as Los Angeles.
So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
As of now, I don’t have any definitive future plans for my career; I am figuring things out as I go along, which is part of what makes this journey so thrilling for me. My main goal is to better myself as an artist and to take action every single day to improve my craft.
Let’s dig a little deeper into your story. What was the hardest time you’ve had?
The hardest time in my career has been being away from my family and friends back in Minnesota. I left a lot of amazing people back home and being that I don’t know many people in LA it can get very isolating. With that being said, I feel very lucky to have people at home that make me miss it so much, and I have met some incredible people since I’ve moved out west. When I start missing my loved ones, all that I have to do is give them a call and that definitely dissipates the feeling of isolation.
What about “Wow-moments” – any moments that stick out? Any moments when you felt like you had made it?
One of the coolest moments of my career was doing makeup on Keala Kennelly and her beautiful partner Nikki for the ESPYs. Keala is a surfer and she was nominated for an ESPY, and when I saw pictures of these beautiful women on the red carpet I remember thinking, ‘That’s my makeup on a red carpet on an ESPY nominee. That’s my makeup. I DID THAT. What?!’ It was definitely a surreal, thrilling feeling. Keala and Nikki are both so sweet and were so welcoming to me. It was such an amazing experience and a huge highlight of my time in LA thus far.
