Meet Taryn of Monrovia Pet Nanny

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taryn.

Hi Taryn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
In 2014, I was in transition and starting over at forty years old. Completely new slate after being wiped out of my career at an engineering firm, a near death medical issue, and relationship and home loss. I had just finished cosmetology school amidst the storm and was building a mobile business as a stylist and part time at a salon. Determined to make ends meet, I had also started walking dogs as supplemental income. I created two websites; one for the dog walking and the other for the mobile hair stylist. Linked them up to Google to increase SEO, and directed clients to review my business pages. It was a race between the tortoise and the hair (hare), and the dog walking won. I was full time in about 6-9 months. Within this unexpected career, I have found an abundance of community, life-long relationships with pets and their parents, love, respect and freedom. It’s also quite lucrative and my main source of income. Granted, the work is very laborious and I take on an average of ten clients a day, at half hour per client. During busy seasons, I see up to fifteen clients per day, plus board a few in my home. I care mostly for dogs and cats, but also have reptiles, rodents, birds, and fish on my route. As a Jack of all trades who has ventured through multiple fields, I have found my mobile pet care service, (Monrovia Pet Nanny), to be the most rich and rewarding.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It certainly hasn’t been smooth. The need for stability and security has hung in the balance throughout. There is an ongoing ebb and flow to this business and I have had to take on a variety of “side hustles” along the way. Uber, Postmates, Rover, Wag, hospital food service, waiting tables, bookkeeping, reality tv transcribing, and SAG extra work as an actor. I now have a licensed home bakery business that is building.

The first five years were the most challenging. As I was building the mobile pet service, I suffered the loss of a few loved ones. An ex, an uncle, a friend, and sat with my mother for a year as she slowly succumbed to her battle with cancer. Trying to move forward through various stages of grief and loss that brought on relapsing trauma from childhood, I sought intensive therapy and self help. The graduation of personal growth through therapy and self help has led to daily practices of self love, altruism, and community building that keeps me on a trajectory of a truly rich and joyful journey.

We’ve been impressed with Monrovia Pet Nanny , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Monrovia Pet Nanny is a mobile pet care service that offers care for animals while their parents are out of town or at work. I schedule half hour visits to their homes, day care, and boarding in my home. With a variety of options and flexibility between the clients and myself, allows to plan a daily route to care for several pets. My service offers pet care that takes pride in dependability, cleanliness, trust, and love. Using tools from my history of trades, I have crafted a well-oiled machine, one-man show that includes accounting & administration, and showcasing adventures on social media.

Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
The discovery of a quality I didn’t know of is the magnetism I have with animals. I’ve always loved them, but had no idea they were so drawn to me. They choose me, and their parents see it and know that if the pet loves me and is excited to come with me, they can part with the comfort of knowing their pet is happy and loved while they’re away.
