Meet Tamara Simons of Curtsy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara Simons.

Tamara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was a child, my life revolved around singing along to every Spice Girls, Britney Spears, and Backstreet Boys album I could find. I just wanted to sing and perform to their songs all day long. My dad thought it was time to show me music outside of my Mid-Late 90s pop obsessive phase and started playing The B52’s, Led Zeppelin, AC/DC, and more. I began to take a deep interest in the way the instruments sounded and just fell in love.

Soon after, my cousin sent me five CDs in the mail: Pixies – Surfer Rosa, Mazzy Star – So Tonight That I Might See, Sonic Youth – Washing Machine, Brian Jonestown Massacre – Strung Out In Heaven, and The Dandy Warhols – Dandys Rule OK. After that, I knew I wanted to spend my life in music, and I wanted to be a guitarist. Next step: I learned how to play guitar.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Yes and no. It’s always a struggle because it’s a game of how much do you want it and how bad do you it and how hard will you work to get it.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I play guitar in two bands called Curtsy and New Media.

Curtsy is angry dream-pop, indie pop, alt-rock, and all that goodness you want that involves harmonies, driving bass, that locked groove, with solid guitars that come together to match everything wonderfully.

New Media is the child of atmospheric rock and fuzz that fuels your need for loud guitars, once again- a driving bass, and drums to keep you moving for days.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Not be afraid to talk to others. Not be afraid to have started earlier. So many things, but I wouldn’t start over because then everything would be different.
