Today we’d like to introduce you to Shijia Luo.

Shijia Luo

Shijia, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey to LA came a long way, inspired by La La Land. Chasing the thrills of the city of stars became a thought when the spectacular opening scene of Damien Chazelle’s highway block hit me. Back then, I was also at a crossroads in my life, where I found myself indecisive about my true calling and passions. Following a specific routine and being organized about my life goals were expected of me, a well-behaved educated Asian child. I never dare to ask myself what is ‘my element’.

I made a bold decision when I decided to be a world citizen, an LA creative fellow, starting from scratch to learn and apply for the most reputable art school in the States. Barely knowing anything about design methodology and design thinking, I dare to step into the world of design to finally embrace what I am emotionally fulfilling about.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
During my pursuit of a master’s degree at the California College of the Arts (CCA), amidst the challenges posed by the pandemic, the shock, and the emotional swings, I was frustrated and couldn’t indulge in the complications of conceptual learning and creative practices. There was a while I had difficulty with simply concentrating on reading and thinking. I called a blackout. Among learning speculative design, I began reflecting this on a story, envisioning a future where advanced technology could revolutionize the way services are delivered remotely. This contemplation led to the conceptualization of a project of mine, a story of an embodied visual sharing experience in exhibition tours in the future.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a visual and experienced creative, where I focus on building up communication through visual language. I enjoy storytelling through the channel of visuals, art, technology, and experience. With a strong desire to express, communicate, and create, I am motivated to devote to many forms of visual expressions, traditional or digital.

Beyond that, I have a good blend of international experience. Despite having lived internationally in Sydney, Beijing, London, and San Francisco, I felt an innate connection with the unique energy of LA, believing it to be my true artistic home. Now, I have the opportunity to share my story, one intertwined with personal experiences and forward-thinking speculation, rather than keeping it to myself.

With the support of esteemed gallery curators, I am proud to share that my speculative project, You, Through Me, will be featured in Los Angeles this March. Just kicked off at Gong Gallery in the past weeks, it would later unfold in its entirety at 4C Gallery, San Gabriel, promising a full immersive showcase.

We’d love to hear about how you think about risk taking?
Every day in my life, I am always on the move to the next risk-taking goal. I believe the people in this city may all, at some point, be risk-takers. To me, it is getting out of your comfort zone and daring to claim what belongs to you, which is the key, especially for creatives. A quote by Andy Warhol has been resonating with me lately: “In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes.” Applied to a specific city, LA undoubtedly earns its place on that list. It is a haven for artists, designers, writers, musicians, actors, and creatives daring to pursue their dreams. The city’s dynamic and diverse atmosphere fosters an environment where risks and possibilities come to life.
