Meet A Certain Energy

Today we’d like to introduce you to A Certain Energy.

Hi A Certain Energy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m a musical artist based out of Fort Wayne, Indiana. Born in Tamuning, Guam, my family and I relocated to the United States in the early 2000s. First stop was in Norwalk, CA, then Michigan, and the story keeps moving forward from there. My father used to take me to studio sessions of his when I was a child. That was my first taste with the process of how a record was created. During my youth he gave me lessons on song construction and performance. Fast forward to high school is when I started taking music more seriously. That’s when I needed more time to perfect my craft and really hone it down. This then lead to my enlistment with the Marine Corps from 2014 to 2018. Traveled the world, interned for record labels in California, and ended up working with a management company called Sinclair Media Group in 2020. After a few single releases Sinclair helped me secure a distribution deal with Foundation Media over in New York City mid 2021. Now today, I’m working on my debut album and figuring out my next step in the music industry.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No dream is a smooth road. The amount of potholes on the road and detours you have to take is astounding. That’s something I wish my younger self understood better. I actually quit music three times before getting the traction that I have today. Consistency, persistence, and a strong will can be your biggest attribute but the biggest hindrance towards achieving your goals. Why? The best way I can describe why is because without a level head through the process, you’ll create setbacks that may creep up on you in the future. When establishing a plan be sure to check every avenue before hitting the road. Metaphorically speaking. You never know when you will hit a roadblock, but if you’ve prepared yourself you’ll go a long ways.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a musical artist that goes by the stage name “A Certain Energy”. I specialized in music composition and songwriting. I started off in the industry as a songwriter. I was not the best, but everything takes time to hone down regardless. Takes some patience too. Plenty of patience to be honest [laughs]. I’m proud of the placements I have been able to achieve thus far in my career. I’ve had articles on The Source, Underground Hip Hop Blog, and many more that I used to dream about being on. I’ve worked with legendary acts such as Mickey Factz, Asher Roth, Kota the Friend, and more. It’s crazy to think this is still the beginning. I personally believe my greatest achievement was signing a distribution deal with Foundation Media. Knowing my background, there wasn’t much guidance in the new age of music business. Took years of writing, tying two and two together, and so many projects with credits and no credits just to hope I’m on the right path. Such a risk, but the greatest things in life have the highest risks right? So, starting in my bedroom at my parent’s house back in 2011 at the time to signing a distribution deal over in New York City in 2021 seems well worth it to me. Plenty more to do though, plenty more.

What really sets me apart would be my drive. People don’t know how much they really want something until they’re put into the position. The moment a position was open I did everything it took to push past the impossible and make everything a reality. To this day my drive is what will determine my success at the end of my career. I’d like to think I have infinite gas [laughs], but we all know there are very few things that last forever. Legacy though, that surely does.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I listen to a lot of jazz or LoFi to ease tense situations my mind may be in. Not many understand the life of a creative. You can be your biggest critique and your biggest supporter at the same time. That there can cause a toll with your personal life. Be sure to find the balance. It will be a challenge, but a challenge well worth the fight.
