Meet Saul Jauregui and Venecia Obando of SunnySideTamales

Today we’d like to introduce you to Saul Jauregui and Venecia Obando.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Saul and Venecia. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
My lifelong passion for food began at a very young age. I was born and raised in Highland Park in the city of Los Angeles. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a household that stressed the importance of having home cooked meals at the table surrounded by family and friends.

I am a Chef by trade, but the journey has not been easy. My biggest critic has been my mom who early on shared that men don’t belong in the kitchen. Winning her over has been my greatest accomplishment. The idea behind Sunny Side Tamales was to make a dish that is typically enjoyed during the holidays available year round with an added twist – a sunny side up egg.

Sunny Side Tamales debuted in April 2018 at Molcajete Dominguero’s First Year Anniversary. We were incredibly humbled to have sold out at our very first event, and since then we have been sharing our tamales year round at various events throughout Southern California.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It was a tough road to start on with little to no experience as a public vendor. Most of my experience came from restaurants and resorts. I was very fortunate to have found more fellow vendors to have shared my same struggles and took the time to show me the ropes.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about SunnySideTamales – what should we know?
We are SunnySideTamales, and focus and hand made tamales with various flavors and toppings.

We are most proud of the fact that we are a small family owned and operated company run by a son and mother team who can compete with some of Los Angeles greatest tamalerias.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I believe my fellow vendors at Molcajete Dominguero and Molcajete themselves deserve all the credit. We would not have the platform we have now without any of them.

Molcajete was the very first to accept our crazy idea for tamales and now host us every month since 2018. Fellow vendors like Gourmeletas push us to do more outreach because they believe so much in us. I will forever be grateful to them all for what they have done for us.
