Today we’d like to introduce you to Sang Um.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
From my early age, i’ve been searching for the real meaning and purpose of my life and how I could make a difference in the world. This desire had lead me to deeper study of God and I began my journey of studying the Theology at Fuller Theological Seminary. I became a pastor and a missionary who would comfort and show God’s love. I traveled to different cities and countries serving and teaching people, helping them to discover their life purpose and about their Creator. During those moments, I had encountered so many people with sicknesses and pains and realized how important it would be if I could help them by bringing healing to their bodies. From that point on, my attention was starting a new study of Oriental medicine and becoming an acupuncturist. My desire of helping other people and making a difference in the world made me to begin a new journey as an Oriental Medicine doctor.
During this study, I met my mentor, Dr. Chung, who practiced Juheng Acupuncture and he helped me to master the most effective and vigorous acupuncture practice that was chosen as the primary medical practice for the Korean imperial palace, which reigned which from 918A.D. to 1392 A.D.
As I look back my journey, I thank my lovely wife and three daughters, who were always supportive, and who gave me strength to stand where I am now.
Has it been a smooth road?
My journey of becoming an acupuncturist and oriental medicine doctor was a special time of discovering my talents and skills. Upon my graduation from South Baylor University, I began treating many patients and the patients shared many good testimonies about their healing experiences.
However, I faced some challenges as I began my own practice first. Even though the Oriental Medicine and acupuncture treatment were regarded as an alternative medicine in the States, still majority of people did not know clearly about the spectrum of acupuncture treatment and it was needed to help them understand the sphere and effectiveness of the treatment. So I even had made some brochure and went out to streets and visited stores to introduce the effectiveness of acupuncture treatment. This helped me to overcome the challenges and I am still introducing this effective healing treatment to others.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the King’s Doctor Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine story. Tell us more about the business.
My clinic is located in a beautiful city of San Dimas, California. Patients wonder and ask me why my clinic is called “King’s Doctor” and I enjoy telling them the deep and special meaning of my clinic’s name.
At the ancient time of Korea, there were the ages of kings ruling over the country with authority.
Doctors lived in the palace for the timely treatment of the king. The king’s doctors were the best doctors who cured the king and his family members with acupuncture and herbal medicine.
The king’s doctors were the ones who had gained trust from the king, apart from many political enemies. They were proven people in terms of integrity, faithfulness, and humbleness. They received fame and prosperity when they cured the king’s diseases or illnesses, but at the same time, they could be in trouble with the King when they failed to cure his diseases and illnesses-even to death.
The king’s doctors were committed to giving their best and were responsible for their duty, and they regarded it as their honor to serve the king. Truly they were the men of trust for the kings and they cured kings with integrity and faithfulness. They are the king’s doctors. Today, with the same spirit, in San Dimas, I am here to serve the people who need to receive real healing.
I am a graduate from Master of Science in Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine from South Baylo University with a specialized training in Juheng Acupuncture. There are two prominent principles of Acupuncture technique which are Chinese principle and Korean principle. Juheng Acupuncture is an orderly, systematic form of traditional Korean Medicine that has prevailed since ages and has been passed over to generations. It was the medical practice that prevailed throughout the history of the Korean imperial palace.
When I meet my patients who come to my clinic, I consider them as kings and their family members. Therefore, I give treatments with sincere and humble heart, and yet with he best practice. I specialize in pain management such as arthritis, neck pain, upper and lower back pain, knee pain, muscle pain after exercise, ankle sprain, sciatica, headache, migraines, postoperative pain, and after stroke rehabilitation, also have expertise in healing emotional problems such as anxiety and depression, dealing with geriatric medicine, and healing to cure women’s disease and GI disorders.
I believe this place will be where the true healing is found.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Many patients are experiencing healing in their bodies, as well as their feelings and emotions. I believe my clinic will be a place where patients experience healing as a whole-body, soul and spirit. I believe over the next 5-10 years; more people will recognize acupuncture and oriental medicine as reliable and effective way of treating the whole body.
