Today we’d like to introduce you to Sandy Perez.
Hi Sandy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I fell in love with makeup at 16. YouTube was really rising in popularity and that entire world was so intriguing to me. It completely sucked me in, and I followed those beauty gurus so closely; it changed what I wanted to do with my life, and I realized being a makeup artist is what I truly wanted. Makeup has filled me with so much joy, and I’m happy I’ve been able to make a career out of it as well.
We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was definitely not a smooth road. In the beginning I struggled with mustering enough courage to even try to build a clientele. Putting yourself out there for the first time and not knowing how you will be perceived can be scary. Thankfully, I had a really strong support system of friends and family who encouraged me to keep trying. I had friends who would let me practice on them to get acquainted with different skin types and tones. Even when you’re somewhat established you can have a bit of imposter syndrome. You question yourself and your craft. You have to remind yourself why you’re here and why you do what you do. My beautiful clients always remind me of that, too! Talking to them and building trust with them is very important to me.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love all things beauty, but I do specialize in bridal makeup artistry. I love being one of the biggest part of my client’s day. This is literally the biggest day of their life! I love the trust that the bride and I build together that day. They trust you to make sure they look their best, and that means a lot to me. You step into their world for a morning, and you get to know the people in their family and their stories; I am most proud of my ability to make brides feel at ease and relax. I feel what separates me from others is my ability to really listen to my girls. I try to be their friend and confidant in those vulnerable moments.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I believe the beauty industry will be around for a long, long time. It’s hard to know exactly what will change since I’ve seen so many trends come and go in the years, I’ve been a makeup artist. I think that’s the beauty of it all: it’s unpredictable.
