Meet Samira Khalil of Santa Barbara Yoga Collective

Today we’d like to introduce you to Samira Khalil.

Samira , we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
It all started with a glass of rosé on a spring afternoon. We were a group of friends talking about how we wanted to do something different — something that brought people together outside the walls of a studio. Fueled by a little sunshine and inspiration, we decided to stop talking about it and make it real. Right then and there, we grabbed a laptop, signed up for a Gmail account, secured a domain, and claimed the Instagram handle. And just like that, Santa Barbara Yoga Collective was born.

We were — and still are — friends first, yogis second. Our goal from the beginning was to share yoga with as many people (and a few four-legged friends) as possible, bringing the practice out of studios and into the world. We’ve hosted flows in parks, on the sand, in breweries, on mountain trails, and anywhere people can move, breathe, and connect. Our classes have always been filled with laughter, good music, and community.

Over time, things have evolved. We’ve grown our team of Collective teachers and shifted our focus to rooftop yoga experiences across Santa Barbara, along with private sessions for bachelorettes, weddings, and retreats. Our mission now is to make wellness feel elevated but still real — blending movement, music, and local culture in spaces that inspire connection.

And this is just the beginning. Our long-term vision is to grow into a full-scale wellness center — a home for yoga, Pilates, sound, and community here in Santa Barbara.

Follow us on social, join our newsletter, and check the site to see where we’ll be flowing next — one rooftop at a time.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a straight line. Like most small businesses, it’s been a mix of creativity, trial and error, and figuring things out as we go.

In the beginning, we were juggling full-time jobs while trying to build something that felt authentic — and that balance was hard. Every class, event, and partnership took time, energy, and a lot of behind-the-scenes effort that people don’t always see. There were moments of doubt, slow seasons, and plenty of lessons learned in everything from scheduling to weather to marketing.

As we grew, one of the biggest challenges was shifting from “fun pop-ups with friends” to a more established brand — something that still felt real and community-driven but could also sustain itself as a business. Finding the right people, setting boundaries, and trusting the process have been huge parts of that growth.

Now, it finally feels like we’re in alignment — with an amazing team of teachers, strong community support, and a clear vision for what’s next. It’s been messy at times, but it’s also been magic.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Santa Barbara Yoga Collective is all about redefining what yoga looks like — bringing movement, mindfulness, and community into the most beautiful spaces in Santa Barbara.

We specialize in outdoor and rooftop yoga experiences, bachelorette and wedding flows, and private group sessions that blend yoga, music, and connection in a way that feels relaxed but elevated. Our classes aren’t about perfection or performance — they’re about showing up, moving, and feeling good.

What sets us apart is our approach: we take yoga out of the studio and into the real world. You’ll find us flowing on hotel rooftops, in vineyards, by the ocean, at vacation rentals, and even at corporate retreats. Every class is designed to match the vibe of the space — curated playlists, thoughtful movement, and that signature Santa Barbara energy.

We’re also expanding into a collective of teachers offering sound baths, breathwork, and Pilates, creating a full-spectrum wellness experience for private events, retreats, and community gatherings.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud of how organic this has all been. What started as a few friends with mats and a dream has grown into something that connects people from all walks of life — locals, travelers, brides, and businesses — through movement and community.

At its core, our brand is about connection, creativity, and calm — making wellness accessible, stylish, and deeply human.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
My first yoga class was at age eight, with my aunt in Portland, Oregon — and it’s still one of my favorite childhood memories.

I remember the smell of the wooden floors, the sound of rain outside, and how everyone in the room just seemed… calm. It was the first time I felt the power of slowing down — of being present. I didn’t realize it then, but that class planted the seed for everything I do now.

That early experience shaped how I see yoga today: it’s not about performance or perfection, it’s about connection — to breath, to self, and to the world around you. That same feeling I had as a kid in that Portland studio is what I try to recreate through Santa Barbara Yoga Collective — spaces where people can drop in, breathe, and feel at home wherever they are.
