Today we’d like to introduce you to Roxy Chen.
Hi Roxy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
Hi, my name is Xinyi Chen, feel free to call me Roxy 🙂 I’m a recent graduate from ArtCenter College of Design with a BFA in Graphic Design. And what does this say about me? Probably nothing. So let me tell you a little bit more about myself and where my work comes from.
From Shanghai to Virginia to California, culture diversity and curiosity drive me as a slowmad, an observer, and a maker. Where these two worlds collide, my creative process begins. Most comfortable at the confluence of playfulness, utility, and simplicity, I strive to combine free thinking and meaningful application of technology. Working in transmedia branding with research and a meticulous eye, I’m always seeking out new ways to have fun and discover innovative solutions, from analog processes to a better and more authentic design experience. When off the clock, you can usually find me hiking and looking for green density in nature, sipping coffee, or dancing around the kitchen while waiting for my dishes to finish cooking.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
When reflecting on my journey as an INTJ graphic designer, I can certainly say that while it hasn’t always been a perfectly smooth road, the challenges I’ve encountered have definitely contributed to my growth and development, such as adapting to change and balancing creativity and practicality. The design industry is constantly evolving, with new trends, tools, and technologies emerging. Adapting to these changes while maintaining the quality and uniqueness of my work has been requiring a continuous learning process. And my analytical nature sometimes may lead me to overthink the practical aspects of a design. Striking the right balance between creative expression and meeting project objectives has been a challenge after I recently started pursuing an internship in the industry, but it’s also pushed me to find innovative solutions that are both functional and visually appealing.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m currently a graphic designer specializing in branding. My focus lies in creating visually compelling identity designs that seamlessly blend innovation and functionality, striving to generate and bring fresh perspectives to every project, as well as create engaging and meaningful design solutions, especially for cultural diversity and human experiences.
One aspect I’m particularly proud of is my capacity to combine my analytical nature with creativity. This unique blend allows me to approach design challenges from multiple angles, ensuring that each project not only looks visually appealing but also serves its intended purpose effectively. I take great pride in developing designs that not only catch the eye but also convey a clear message and resonate with my target audience.
And what I think that sets me apart from others is my dedication to a holistic design process in the field of visual identity. I believe in deeply understanding the client’s goals, target audience, and the context in which the design will be used. This foundation allows me to create designs that align with the client’s objectives and stand out in a crowded market. I’m grateful that my INTJ personality always drives me to explore unconventional solutions and encourages me to use empathy and curiosity to think about the context and audience at every step of the process. New is hard and a challenge I embrace. I resist convention and commit to thinking differently, resulting in designs that are both innovative and purpose-driven.
Any big plans?
I’m naturally inclined to focus on the big picture and long-term goals, so in essence, my future plans involve a deliberate focus on continuous learning, innovation, and personal growth. One of the key directions I’m planning to take is mastering some of the new design tools and technologies. Staying at the forefront of technology is crucial. So I’m planning to invest time in mastering new design tools and technologies that can enhance my efficiency and creative capabilities. This includes exploring emerging design trends and adapting to innovative tools that can streamline my personal workflow.
Another direction would be balancing work and well-being. Initially, I might have approached my career with a pretty strong focus on my work, often prioritizing projects and creative pursuits over personal well-being. Over time, my experiences in the real industry have likely led me to reevaluate the importance of health. Now, I believe achieving a healthy work-life balance is my priority. I intend to implement specific strategies to ensure that I remain productive and inspired without compromising my well-being, such as setting clear boundaries, practicing mindfulness techniques, and engaging in activities that fuel my creativity outside of work.
While I don’t anticipate radical shifts recently, I’m excited about the prospect of refining my approach, taking on new challenges, and making a meaningful impact through my work as a graphic designer 🙂
