Meet Roseanney Liu of Scorpius in Redondo Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roseanney Liu.

Roseanney, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I’m an immigrant from divorced parents and raised nearly single-handedly by my mother who to this day speaks very little English. I’ve come from being a preteen language learner and not fitting in, to being a leader in my class and work. I have been teaching ESL – full circle to adult students for 15 years, freelance writing for 11 years, and books writing for two years.

Overcoming challenges associated with being a language learner, an immigrant and the stigmas tied to children from divorced families, I have learned to instill confidence in myself, make bold choices and succeeded in many of my choices (publishing, mountain climbing, traveling abroad, etc.). Now I see to empower more people to find their own badassery in order to live their lives out loud as I do.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Some struggles along the way are comparisonitis – wondering if I could do what some people I have looked up to already have done. Overcoming language learning challenges and acculturation as a child made the first two years in a new country very difficult, especially coming from an Asian country with marked differences in education and culture from that of the US.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I write and publish my own books and have had experience with indie and hybrid publishing, now seeking to explore the third channel of publishing for my 7th book with traditional publishers. I consult with new authors on how they can publish and market themselves and their books.

I also speak to groups on confidence mastery, which I believe is the key to doing anything bold and risk-taking in life. I also seek to speak to and empower more men to become better men so they can lift up the women in their lives which in turn improves the quality of their own lives too.

What sets me apart is that I’m a risk-taker and I don’t tell myself No as there’s plenty of No-givers along the way. I have taken big risks that have enabled me to either succeed in what I set out to do or shed light on lessons I needed to learn so that I can make myself better or to impart those lessons for those that come after me on the same path.

As a teacher and a speaker, my intention to help people get the confidence to do the hard things in life – the chasing of big goals – so that they live out loud in the pursuit of their dreams.

What were you like growing up?
I was studious, hard-working, and gregarious. As a student growing up in Taipei, summer school was typical for me and all other elementary school students and striving for 100% on everything was a way of life.

My independence was fostered at a young age as I walked to/from school for half hour each way every day; I often walked or biked on my own in the neighborhood.

I have always loved being outside or outdoors, so I balanced watching a lot of variety TV shows (that’s how I got glasses at a young age because myopia set in around age 9) with playing outside, climbing trees or playing on equipment at school or the local parks.
