Meet Robert Windsay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robert Windsay.

Robert Windsay

Robert, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I can take you back to when I first started rapping at the age of 9. Right then and there, I knew I found my purpose. I remember the moment like yesterday I created this rap in my head during recess, and I used 50 cents flow on “many men” because I believe he was my favorite rapper at the time. Fast forward at 15 years old me and my best friends formed a group and started making songs just excited about life lol. It ended up boiling down to 2 of us, me and Rummie Abiff. We realized that we wanted to be more than a group but a collective so that we could remain solo artists. In 2013 I changed my name from “Killabee” to Beeisthefuture and I been living in my power ever since. I started producing at 18 with a strong desire to take my passion to the next level and to be original in this game. I’m the most passionate person I know. I hated all my jobs, feeling depressed, misunderstood, and just flat out like an alien after a while because I felt like, most times, I was the only one who seen more than the environment. What keeps me going is the promise I made to myself at 17 to dedicate my life to my dreams. Fast forward a bit, right before I graduated college, I told my family that I was moving to California (we’re all from New Orleans). A lot of people didn’t believe me, but now I’ve been here almost 6 years still feeling fresh & motivated.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There’s times when it was smooth and times when it wasn’t. One of my biggest struggles along the way was dealing with a nasty breakup 8 months into me moving to California. When I moved, I was in a relationship, and the plan was for me to get things set up and for her to follow me a couple months after. We broke up one random morning via FaceTime, and she went on to start a new relationship immediately after. It’s something I’ve healed from substantially, but it’s a pivotal part of my story. I was completely heartbroken. And even more so because I know that I wasn’t the best man for her at the time & me moving us to Cali was my way to try and fix things. I’ve learned so much from the experience, though. That and also the trial and errors of this music industry. I’ve been screwed over, let down, all that, but I learn and keep going. I’ve lost thousands on fake promo. It’s deeper than the setbacks.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I want people to know that I’m an artist/producer, and I take both very serious. I want to be the best at both, and I pride myself on my originality. I like to call it alternative hip hop, but sometimes I feel that even boxes it in. It’s whatever it makes you feel, with some rapping lol. My production sounds like no one. I’ve done this without barely sampling in my catalog. I’m very much known for my original sound and the progressive energy of my personality and music.

Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My artist, who is also my dad, “Norm The General,” is a man who raised me and taught me solid principles of life. I got introduced to a lot of dope hip hop because of him, and he continues to inspire me today no matter how big I’m getting as an artist. He always told me to lean on my originality and that he believes in me despite anything going on in life. I can’t not mention my brother, my best friend, Rummie Abiff. We literally grew up together since 2 years old, and when we were teenagers, he showed me what it was to be cool and just be yourself. I admired his confidence & it definitely fueled mine.
