Hi Robert, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Since I was a kid, djing has always been part of my life. My dad and his brothers are DJ’S. My oldest brother started to DJ when I was about ten years old. A few after him I was taught how to DJ. With many years of practicing at home, I started to take on gigs for family and friends in high school and through my early 20s. In 2020 when the pandemic hit and everyone was on lockdown I started to learn about “wedding djs.” With many conversations with djs online, I learned that’s where the big checks were. I started to invest in newer equipment and slowly started booking weddings and quinceaneras. From seven weddings in 2021 to 40+ weddings and quinceaneras in 2023. I found my calling and it’s been great!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
No, not at all. No one trusted me to do their weddings. So, I charged little to nothing at first to get content for Instagram. Once I had enough and messages started to come in asking for prices. I charged a fair wedding DJ rate. Instagram has made it easier for me to advertise and I take full advantage of it. Instagram is one of my tools to help get clients and book all my events.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Era Events does all upscale events. Weddings, quinceaneras/sweet 16s, corporate and Luxury restaurants.
What makes us different from other companies is that we care. We really take every event and treat it as if it was our own event. Sometimes I think we care more about the event than the host.
I think what makes me most proud is being able to make someone’s event. A wedding can be someone’s most important day in their life and knowing I made it great makes me proud. I also am proud of being able to have employees. Having the ability to help pay someone to do what we love is amazing.
Era Events does all events. Yes, we do a lot of weddings and other formal events but there is no event too small. If there’s music needed we can help.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
A risk that freaked me out the most was after hiring someone and keeping them employed. As a business owner sometimes we don’t know what 6 months, 12 months or 18 months down the road looks like. During peak season I don’t worry but the slow season is what keeps me nervous. Fortunately, we stay busy year round but sometimes we don’t know that until 30 days out.
Pricing:
- Weddings range from $1600-$2100+
- Quinceanera’s/sweet 16s range from $900-$1400
- Typically anything else is about $200 per hour with exceptions to some events.
