Today we’d like to introduce you to Rmax Goodwin.
Rmax, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in Los Angeles and started teaching myself sleight-of-hand magic at six or seven years old. A second-grade teacher told me about the Magic Castle in Hollywood, a mysterious club for magicians, and encouraged me to audition. At 14, I auditioned for and was accepted in the Magic Castle Junior Program and was then asked to start performing there professionally at 15. I performed there throughout high school and college and a little over five years ago decided to take the plunge and start performing full time.
Now I perform nationwide at high end corporate and private events, roughly 100 days a year. I perform a blend of sleight of hand magic and mentalism, for groups as small as four and as large as a 1,000. And I’ve also been asked to advise other performers on their shows and consult for TV projects.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’ve been very lucky. When I decided to perform full time and start the business more formally, I had already amassed a strong network of peers and a clientele that could support me. I was fortunate to have little student debt and no other real responsibilities. That freedom allowed me to take risks, make mistakes, and generally reduced the anxiety of what were very uncertain times. Other struggles have simply been on the performance side: always wanting to explore new areas of the craft, making mistakes, and learning from them. More challenges than struggles. Not being able to perform in-person events due to the pandemic has been the first major challenge, though I’ve been able to adapt via virtual shows.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
We are an entertainment company focusing on magic and mentalism. I perform at corporate and private events nationwide and often secure additional talent for clients. I specialize in close up sleight of hand magic, primarily card magic and mentalism. I have the flexibility to perform in a broad array of venues and situations. It’s all unassuming in appearance, often just a deck of cards and a notepad, so I do appreciate the “I wasn’t expecting it to be THIS good” or “I thought I had seen this before, but nowhere near this level.”
I’m proud to be in a position to say no to the events we don’t want to do. I can stay true to the vision of the performance I enjoy most, and we are financially secure enough to not have to compromise the craft. It’s a great position to be in. Of course, we are professional and easy to work with like many other magicians, but what sets us apart is simply the quality and intimacy of the performance. The sleight of hand magic and mentalism I do is on a high level few can replicate.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
All trends point to me performing nationally more and more. A few years ago, I performed 5 or 6 times a year out of state. Now I perform one or two events/month out of state and I see that progressing to one/week. I look forward to performing internationally and hopefully landing a theater show.
