Meet Rhiannon Gillis of Amber and Honey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rhiannon Gillis.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began working for firms in LA designing fast food restaurants, and then hotels in Hawaii. It was always fun, but there was something missing. I never loved the style that we created, and there was such a lack of intimacy with these large projects. I ended up taking a break and chose to start blogging. I created Rhiannon’s Interiors, and began really finding my niche.

After having my first daughter, I discovered that I loved working with families who were in the same situation as myself. Trying to keep your place nice for you and your adult friends, but also practical and kid friendly for the little ones. I finally fell back in love with interior design after I saw what an impact these design changes made on people. I have now launched Amber and Honey and am offering extended services and will give families options. With all of the benefits of the internet, people shouldn’t have to pay more for these types of services. I’m excited for what else we may get to do along the way.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
In general, being an entrepreneur is incredibly. difficult. The amount of self-doubt you can put upon yourself is real and it is difficult to break free from. However, it really does depend on what you put into it. I have put everything into this because I want it to succeed. It is very important for me.

I have taken the times where it was slow, or when I was not feeling all too positive about my work, and I chose to push those negative emotions aside, and commit everything to it. I want to know that no matter what, I tried.

My poor family certainly pays a price. I want to always be sure that I am putting them first, and that hasn’t always been the case during. They are so supportive and understanding.

Please tell us about Amber and Honey.
Amber and Honey is a home decor company that wants to be your one stop for all your needs. We want to be sure we are easily accessible, remain affordable, and always keep it fun.

When I began doing my own projects, the one complaint I heard most was how intimidating it was turning to an interior designer. I don’t want it to be that way. I want it to be something that the average family can afford, and that they can be thrilled with the results in the end.

With Amber and Honey, we offer local design services, as well as organizational tools and home staging. We are providing virtual design for those who are not so local, and that need the ease of the e-design process.

We will promote workshops and keep our functions light and entertaining.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
One of my favorite memories from childhood involved my Grandmother, whom I adore, and my cousin Josh who was just a couple of years younger than me. My grandmother got the idea for us to take a bike ride and then climb up this enormous mountain in my home town. It was actually more like a hill, but I swear it felt monstrous when I was younger. The bike ride was awful, the climb up the hill was awful. We got sick afterwards and were just covered in everything you can imagine that was living on this hill. However, it was a bonding experience that I will never forget. It was a time where I can look back on and remember my Grandmother fondly. Yes, she was heckling us and reminding us of what wimps we were, but it was so very exciting when we accomplished the trip.

She was always doing things like this. Trying to remind us that we were much stronger than we thought we were. As much as we hated it when we were younger, I know we all have grown to see some real value in that.
