Today we’d like to introduce you to Regina Lingling Zhang
Regina Lingling, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My journey started when I first saw Iron Man in the movie theater. That was the moment I realized there was a place called Hollywood—where the language, food, and culture were drastically different from mine—yet they were creating stories that captivated audiences worldwide. That experience sparked my curiosity about filmmaking and the people behind the stories I loved.
Growing up, watching movies and TV shows was a shared hobby in my family, something that brought us together. My passion for storytelling eventually led me to study producing and entertainment management at Boston University, where I deepened my understanding of the industry and honed my skills in bringing stories to life.
After graduation, I started working in development, where I collaborated with creatives to shape and refine projects. However, I found myself increasingly drawn to projects that resonated with me personally. That realization, along with my desire to gain hands-on production experience, led me to take a leap—I left my company to team up with friends, independently producing projects we believe in. It’s both exciting and uncertain, but I’m embracing the challenges and opportunities that come with it. I’m now fully dedicating myself to my passion and working toward shared goals with like-minded talents.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I entered the industry during the pandemic, which disrupted productions and hiring opportunities, and just as things began stabilizing, the double strikes created further uncertainty. On top of that, visa restrictions added another layer of complexity, making it even harder to navigate my career path.
Working in development also came with its own challenges. The industry has become increasingly risk-averse, making it difficult to get projects off the ground. One of the hardest parts of my job was having to let go of pitches I truly believed in—stories that were compelling and unique—but didn’t fit within the company’s strategy. That disconnect between creative passion and corporate priorities was frustrating, and as the industry contracted, opportunities in the traditional route became even scarcer.
Right now, for someone trying to pursue producing, there’s no clear path forward. It often feels like you’re constantly searching for a way in, only to find more gatekeepers and fewer opportunities. The traditional routes that once existed are disappearing, and it’s become harder than ever to break in or sustain a career. At times, it feels discouraging, but it has also forced me to rethink what a satisfying career looks like and find new ways to keep doing what I love.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a multimedia producer working across different formats, from film and TV to digital content and podcasts. I thrive on embracing new ways of storytelling and adapting to the evolving media landscape. My ability to work across various mediums allows me to explore fresh, dynamic ways to engage audiences and bring stories to life.
Beyond my work in film and TV, I also host and produce my own Chinese podcast, Fresh Off the Plane, where I, along with two friends, explore diverse topics from the perspective of the new generation of first-generation East Asian women.
What truly sets me apart is my international background and ability to stay current with both the Chinese and Hollywood markets. I grew up in China and have a deep understanding of its industry while being professionally trained in Hollywood. I have a firsthand grasp of the ever-changing landscapes, audience behaviors, and industry trends in both markets as they evolve. This perspective allows me to bridge the gap, identify opportunities, and foster collaborations that others might overlook.
How do you define success?
I define success as having both the material and mental foundation to make my own choices, rather than being chosen by circumstances.
