Today we’d like to introduce you to Raychel “Raye” Smith.
Raychel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
The concept for Boss Moves Planners actually was inspired by my sister Racquel.
Racquel is a crafty and creative person, and around June 2016, she had an idea to begin a gift wrapping pop-up at the local mall during the 2016 holiday season. I remember her being so passionate and excited about this idea, and me being excited for her.
Immediately, we began working out logistics and marketing schemes, trying to figure out the best way to get the word out. By the time the 2016 holiday season came, I noticed that Racquel’s pop-up gift wrapping business was null. I questioned her about it, and she simply replied, “I didn’t properly plan for it!”.
Because it was the holiday season, I figured that I’d buy her a planner with some type of accountability/progress tracker for Christmas, and to my surprise, I couldn’t find one that I liked. That’s when the light bulb went off.
I thought to myself that many people (like my sister) could use a planner that could help them stay accountable to their goals, and see mounds of progress in a year’s timing – thus the Boss Moves Planner was birthed.
Has it been a smooth road?
As a new business owner, this road has been challenging. I learned that you can read all the books and listen to all the podcasts you want, but until you actually execute, you really don’t know what you’re up against. Learning to actually set up a tax payment schedule, raise capital, create a social media plan, and to maintain your cool with testy customers is a struggle. However, I found that my dedication and passion for this business has given me the grace to deal with it all.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Boss Moves Planners story. Tell us more about the business.
The Boss Moves Planner (BMP) is the innovative organizer for the goal-oriented individual. The BMP is made with an unmatched quarterly progress tracking system that helps users stay dedicated to their goals, and see major progress within a year’s timing.
The Boss Moves Planner also includes a goal intake form, mental venting journal pages, and monthly quotes of encouragement from world-renown influencers. In December 2017, The Boss Moves Planner was listed #1 in Essence Magazine’s Girl Boss Gift Guide and has been featured in a host of publications.
Boss Moves Planners also has a philanthropic sector in which we host community events that directly touch the lives of people from underserved communities through the power of planning.
Most recently, Boss Moves Planners partnered with the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza and Pretty Women Pray Not Pray to produce a free vision board party called “A Boss Vision Board Party.” We strongly believe that if underserved communities can grasp the concept of planning, they can then change their immediate circumstances.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
When creating the Boss Moves Planner, I had to seriously consider the digital world that we live in. Everything is ran by technology. You can even decide not to go to the grocery store, open your Uber Eats app, and boom – your meal is at your door in ten minutes.
However, before I began the business, I researched and compared the qualities of physically writing down your goals vs. typing your goals into an app. I found that a person is 42% more likely to achieve their goals simply by writing them down, as opposed to typing them into a device.
That pretty much made me want to stay brick and mortar, and produce a physical planner. Will we incorporate technology somewhere down the road? Maybe! I haven’t totally ruled it out, but it has to make sense. In the meantime, we are dedicated to growing and spreading the word about this life-changing tool!
