Today we’d like to introduce you to Ramin Rafie.
Hi Ramin, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a primary care physician – grew up in LA – was fortunate enough to go to UCLA for College and UCI for medical school, where I was class president – despite being class president didn’t match into residency, and ended up becoming a primary care physician in Michigan – ended up making house calls for what turned out the nation’s largest ACO and helped prove to Medicare that it’s more cost-effective to provide care in the home, ushering in the Hospital @ Home model of care before covid. I felt compelled to go into primary care since my own dad, a dentist, got diagnosed with Parkinson’s during my time in medical school.
Unfortunately, my father-in-law also passed away from Covid ~ two months before the vaccine came out, which made me temporarily retire from clinical medicine. I still practice primary care but also try to build on my experience in the ACO and consult for companies in the growing H@H model of care, and have become certified in AI in medicine.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Has not been a smooth road at all.
Notable areas:
** Didn’t get into medical school the first time I applied
** Didn’t match into a residency in CA despite being a class president at UCI
** Struggled to work the crazy hours during residency & internship but was able to persevere given my family’s struggles to adapt to life in Los Angeles and the USA as immigrants
** During my many struggles – have used my moral compass to guide me in my struggles
** Struggled to pass my board exams – to the point that I almost didn’t become a licensed physician
** Have had many struggles in my journey but have managed to persevere and at times – accomplish great things, impacting the US healthcare system on a national scale with my work in the ACO & H@H
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a practicing primary care physician – I struggled very much to get where I am in my place in life and career, and very proud of my work in the ACO – establishing the H@H model of care BEFORE covid.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Yes – very important, and enjoyed to slow down and spending more time with my kids and family.
In this always on and ‘productive’ society – sometimes it’s better to just slow down and not get caught up in the ‘giant rat race’ – one of the benefits of leaving SoCal.
