Meet Rainer Koibur

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rainer Koibur.

Hi Rainer, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Hi, my name is Rainer Christmas Merchark Koibur, but people call me Ray for short, I’m originally from Indonesia and currently living in Boston as a Berklee College of Music student. Mainly I am a self-employed music producer and a member of an RnB band/group with my two other friends who lives in two different countries. It has been a bumpy road to get where I am today, however, without those bumps I might not be where I am today. In one instance, I met, formed, and released an album with my band (entropy.) during the pandemic which helped me grow as an artist. Without the pandemic, I wouldn’t have the recognition I have today as a music producer.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It never has been smooth but I’m glad that it happened. It all started in 2015 when I ran into trouble in my high school in Ohio where I almost got deported but was given a second chance due to my good grades and achievements in school. I was then moved into a boarding school in Lake Tahoe, CA where I graduated in 2020. I grew as a musician and fell in love with the art form during my years in this boarding school, which is also where I met my college counselor who told me to audition for Berklee College of Music.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a music producer and performer. I am usually known as a Dj, rapper, and live looping artist at Berklee which is where I have been performing the most. Mainly, I work as a music producer who mixes and masters songs from my friends and clients. I can work with any kind of genre, but I usually produce RnB songs with my band and house/EDM music as a hobby. My band’s name is “entropy.” and the members are Dave Reynard (lead singer), Justin Aula (vocalist, lead songwriter), and me (main producer/engineer). The proudest moment I’ve had was when a friend sends me a heartfelt message about how my band’s song helped them go through a tough time in their life. I hope to continue to impact people’s lives with my talents in music.

What matters most to you?
Music matters to me the most because it gives me motivation and hope and is a big reason why I reconnected and got closer to my family and friends.
