Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Serrato-Morrisey.
Rachel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We are a husband and wife dog nerd duo. Our first dog together is named Kira and we knew right away we wanted her around for as long as possible and nutrition would play a major role in assuring that. At the time, we couldn’t find a truly raw product that was free of preservatives and affordable for a young growing family. Coming from a family-owned meat company and a long history of entrepreneurs, I knew my father could help make this product a competitor of its category.
He was and still continues to work as our manufacturer and together we’ve listened, learned and grown to understand the fresh pet food community and what it takes to thrive in this growing industry.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This road, like many independent retailers has had many setbacks than we’d like to admit, we don’t have any distributors, we’ve stirred the murky waters of online home delivery with perishable products, and recently witnessed a worldwide meat shortage of COVID-19, in which has had an effect on our inventory and pricing. However, we’ve continued to push through, educate others, and finally see the benefits of hard work and perseverance. Most importantly, we’ve saved lives. We started this company knowing the benefits of feeding pets a minimally processed diet, but the hands on emotional experience we didn’t expect.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Happee Dawg – what should we know?
We come from a generational family meat business whom my Great Grandfather, Grandfather, and Father have continued to run since 1922. A business that was known to serve restaurants and retail stores smoked and fresh meats. Our love for pets and meat knowledge grew to a full-blown e-commerce direct to consumer platform. We believe in feeding the masses, not the classes, where affordability and quality should be available to all pet owners. We are a meat one stop shop. Where you can purchase dinner for your family as well as raw meals and treats for your pets- online or in person at our plant in Highland, CA. We do it all in house and oversee all aspects of production from beginning to end.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Well, I don’t believe in luck when speaking about business or a silver spoon. I believe in opportunity, dedication and prayer. Opportunity can be given to anyone, but what you do with it is the fundamental difference between hard work and luck.
