Today we’d like to introduce you to Zach Iddings.
Zach, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I moved out to LA from Wyoming back in 2007 to pursue graphic design. I wound up teaching myself animation and became a full-time animator for a studio. About a couple years or so later I decided to go freelance, and have been ever since. That’s what pays the bills. Photography is a passion and I use that as my outlet for creating things “my way”. I’ve always been taking photos since way back in high school, starting with film. These days I typically go on adventures via motorcycle and shoot all digital. Sometimes a shoot day will be “for fun” and other times I’ll be shooting product for brands, or for my own clothing brand.
Has it been a smooth road?
All in all, everything’s been pretty smooth. The only struggles I would say is being overworked at times with the day job and not having the mental energy to fulfill my own creative endeavors with photography.
Have you ever felt like giving up?
Yes and no. Times I have felt like quitting are times when I think everything I do sucks. I think anyone in the creative fields have these moments. A lot of times we are never satisfied. I look back on past work and cringe sometimes and wonder what I’m doing. But it just makes me want to try harder to better myself.
What would you tell someone who is just starting out?
Just do what makes you happy and make it fun. If you try too hard, you’ll burn yourself out and burn others out. Wait for the good moments to show themselves, don’t force anything but always be ready.
What are you looking forward to?
I’m most excited to see where photography takes me, and the people and places I’ll get to see along the way. Getting to know new people is a pretty good payoff.
