Today we’d like to introduce you to Phelton Calhoun Jr.. They and their team shared their story with us below:
Please meet The General Manager of La Casa Del Camino: La Casa Del Camino Hotel is one of the most popular spots in Laguna Beach, California for one main reason- “The Rooftop” Bar. Like many people who first find their feet planted firmly in the sand and shores of this near “South County” jewel of a city, Phelton Calhoun Jr from Washington D.C. let the beauty of the West Coast wash over him so hard he never returned East. As the new GM of La Casa Del Camino, Mr. Calhoun is on a mission to bring that “at home feeling” and have the location be known for more than just the bar. As he sees it, once you come to The Rooftop Bar, you should be so relaxed and happy that you stay the night. The hotel has some amazing rooms and suites with very cool themes. One is the skateboard room that has skateboard, art and wheels mounted and displayed to rev up those nostalgic memories of the skate park and the 80’s. It presents a cozy and romantic aesthetic lending itself to unforgettable ocean views. Another is of course, the classic surfboard room that is perfect for a relaxing evening in with the hopes of a glimpse of a seal or sea lion before sunset. Phelton Calhoun Jr has already made some bold moves in his short time at La Casa Del Camino, in a little less than a year he has managed to lead this Laguna Beach gem in a full circle vintage “Hollywood” move and usher in influencers, housewives, actors and models. He was recently seen at one of the Oscars week events in Hollywood at a gifting suite that hosted Oscar nominees, winners and actors including Tavon Free, Willie Garson and more. For his part, Mr. Calhoun has found a new home in Laguna Beach and is quoted as saying he “loves it here”. As a bilingual person, it helps him connect with the historic and beautiful culture that is embedded in L.B. As Phelton would put it, “Come for The Rooftop Bar, Enjoy the breathtaking views of Catalina Island while witnessing the electric sunset, but Sleep here for the memorable hotel stay”. And as a new resident of Laguna Beach myself, I could not agree with him more.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
With most transitions especially from coast to coast there is always an adjustment period. Getting to know the market, the different vibes in the area. It was a wonderful challenge that I welcomed. The hotel is a historic landmark in Laguna Beach and I needed to bring that to the forefront. Most knew of the famous rooftop but the property was second. What makes Laguna Beach so special is the history that’s here and the stories; that is what my mission was to bring everyone together to experience it. I also came in during the peak of COVID to help re-open the property and get it up and running which was a mission in its self but well worth it. It’s been a very long road, La Casa del Camino started at #14 on Trip Advisor and they are now #4 in Three years!!!!
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I started in hospitality at the age of 16 as a banquet houseman and worked my way through many positions and companies learning from some of the best coworkers, managers and owners turned friends that I have ever had. I specialize in Hotel Management, both rooms and food and beverage as well as free-standing restaurants. I’ve worked with may systems on both ends. Opera, Skytouch, Lightspeed, Galaxy, Micros, Silverware, Flexipass, Akia and Toast just to name a few. I’ve also done consultations to help open hotels and restaurants. I was a part of and lead the first Food Waste Program for the WWE back on the east coast when I was part of Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, now Accor Hotels, which encompassed several hotels on the east coast and Midwest. I’m very personable, able to meet and work with a wide range of talent and clients from Hollywood, media you name it. I am also on the Board of Directors for Visit Laguna Beach, happy to be a part of a great team who share the same values about taking care of the community! As the industry is always changing you learn something new every day. I live by this quote “Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value.” — Albert Einstein.
I’m most proud of being able to come this far and managing so much, I am always extra hard on myself to push the boundaries, and those that saw the spark in me that also helped push me for forward. I think what really sets me apart from others is my drive, I never forget where I came from and as I grow in my career and remember those that have helped me I make sure they grow with me. Being a mentor for those also getting into the industry, sharing connections and making more is always a plus.
How do you think about luck?
I wouldn’t say lucky, but fortunate and blessed. It takes a certain type of person to want to be in this business. I’ve had a great support system, family and friends who never doubted me even though I did sometimes myself. Being in hospitality does require a lot of your time, but it’s just learning that perfect balance so you still are able to enjoy yourself for your hard work. I’m very thankful to have my family did the big jump from Washington D.C. with me, all the hard work and motivation is because of them.
