Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Gomes
Hi Paul, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
After graduating from college with a degree in Public Health, I faced the unexpected challenge of finding a well-paying job. I had assumed my degree would open doors, but the reality was quite different. The minimum wage at the time was $12 an hour, and with student loans to pay off, it wasn’t enough to cover my expenses. This situation forced me to look beyond my immediate network for opportunities.
My first experience with phone flipping came when someone gave me a broken iPhone. I used my laptop to purchase a replacement screen from eBay, repaired the phone, and realized the potential for passive income. However, like many initial business ideas, my early attempts didn’t succeed.
Inspired by Steve Jobs’ words, “We redefine expectations, first for ourselves, then for the world. Because we’re a little crazy. Because ‘good enough’ isn’t. Because what we do says who we are. We find courage. To try and to fail, to learn and to grow, to figure out what’s next, to imagine the unimaginable, to do it all over again tomorrow,” I persisted in my entrepreneurial journey.
My first attempt at launching a business didn’t go as planned, so I set it aside for a while. However, my passion for helping people with their devices never waned. While working at a plant nursery, I noticed many co-workers had broken devices and complained about high repair costs. Using my skills, I began repairing their devices at affordable prices. Seeing their smiles and satisfaction rekindled my passion.
As platforms like Facebook and OfferUp started gaining popularity, I found opportunities to buy and sell unwanted or damaged devices, which helped me continue my journey in phone repair. Initially, finding deals was challenging, and I took breaks when things didn’t go as expected. But as life would have it, I found my way back to phone flipping in early 2019.
Working at Bird Rides, the scooter company, I acquired valuable skills in customer service and technology, reinforcing my belief that “good enough” isn’t enough. Recognizing the growing need for affordable devices, I founded Sale Used iPhone. Our mission is to provide customers with the ability to sell their devices for cash, especially in challenging economic times. We understand the impact of inflation and the necessity of having access to cash in emergencies.
At Sale Used iPhone, we purchase Apple products that customers no longer need, offering them financial flexibility. We also sell quality devices at affordable prices to ensure accessibility for everyone. Through determination and a commitment to providing valuable services, I’ve built a business that not only meets market demands but also helps people in need.
My journey from college graduate to business owner has taught me the importance of resilience, innovation, and community service. I am excited to continue growing and adapting in the ever-changing landscape of technology.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road by any means. One of the biggest challenges we’ve faced is dealing with scammers. We’ve encountered situations where people try to pay with fake money, bring in counterfeit phones, or even attempt to steal devices. While we’ve become quite skilled at spotting these individuals quickly, there are times when someone seems trustworthy but ends up scamming us.
This aspect of the business is particularly challenging because it puts us at risk, especially when meeting people in various locations. However, much like Uber drivers who navigate the risks of meeting strangers, we also have the opportunity to connect with new people and share a piece of ourselves with them. Despite the challenges, these interactions make the experience rewarding and help us grow both personally and professionally.
We understand that building a business in Los Angeles is not easy, with high rents and the city’s challenges in providing flexibility or safety for business owners. Here, our team regularly discusses and shares tips and tricks to help keep us safe and make the journey smoother.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Sale Used iPhone ?
Here’s a comprehensive response to the prompt using the provided information:
SaleUsediPhone was created to help people in need of quick cash for emergencies. Over time, we’ve had customers share how our services have enabled them to pay their rent, cover medical bills, or even handle funeral expenses for loved ones. What truly sets us apart from others is that we don’t just focus on business transactions—we focus on building connections and offering support during challenging times.
Our approach is deeply rooted in customer service, much like the leading tech companies you’re familiar with. There have been moments when a simple business meeting turned into a meaningful conversation, where I shared life advice with customers going through tough times. These interactions often evolve from transactional exchanges to friendly conversations, where we not only help them sell a device but also provide positive words and empathy to uplift their spirits.
My experience working at Apple taught me the importance of showing empathy toward customers. We never truly know what someone is going through, and the least we can do is offer them a fair price for their device or share a bit of positivity. At SaleUsediPhone, we buy broken devices, providing customers with the flexibility of not having to repair them before selling. This eliminates the added expense of fixing a device, which is often something customers can’t afford.
Ultimately, we’re most proud of the fact that our business goes beyond just buying and selling devices—we offer a supportive experience that acknowledges the humanity in every interaction. We want your readers to know that SaleUsediPhone isn’t just a business; it’s a place where people can find not only financial relief but also a sense of connection and understanding.
Here, we buy unwanted devices for cash such as iPads, MacBooks, iPhones, and Samsung phones. While there are some devices we may not be able to purchase, we always do our best to assist in any way we can.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up in a household of four was challenging, especially as the youngest of the boys. I often struggled to find my identity and footing. While my mom loved us equally, there were moments when I felt like I wasn’t receiving the same attention, which is something many children experience without fully understanding what their parents are going through.
My mom, a migrant from a third-world country, faced significant challenges in providing for four children without the support of extended family. The saying, “It takes a village to raise a child,” rings true, but my mom didn’t have that village—just my dad and herself. Despite these challenges, she always knew how to protect us.
My mom was an entrepreneur at heart. The traditional 9-to-5 lifestyle didn’t work for her, especially with four children to care for. With no formal skills, no driving experience, and no established network, she faced an uphill battle. Yet, she was determined and resourceful. She started by selling crystal items like vases and plates, but like many business ventures, it didn’t work out. However, failure never discouraged her; she saw it as a part of growing up and learning.
Being poor in America, we relied on government assistance, including WIC, which provided my mom with mozzarella cheese from a company called Galbani. This sparked an idea—selling pupusas, a traditional Salvadoran dish, to our diverse neighborhood where they were quite popular. My mom started selling pupusas from our house in the early 2000s, and the business took off. She saved enough money to buy the house we lived in from my uncle, as well as an additional property.
Then, the 2008 recession hit. My mom lost her business and both houses as people could no longer afford to dine out. Despite these hardships, she remained positive.
I share this story because it shaped who I am today. Growing up with my mom as a mentor taught me invaluable lessons about managing and scaling a business. Her experiences, both successes and failures, have become my playbook in running SaleUsediPhones. While the industry is different, the values are the same. My mom’s story is my story as well. She taught us early on that while a 9-to-5 job is great, it’s not necessarily the path to retirement. It’s important to focus on the bigger picture and remain resilient, no matter the challenges.
