Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Ford.
I was born in NC with a bone disorder called Osteogenesis Imperfecta. Basically, I have broken almost every bone in my body. I started acting like a child doing commercials for the Easter Seals Society. As a teenager, I decided I wanted to be a Rockstar and taught myself how to play guitar.
After high school, I decided to move to Los Angeles to become a Rockstar and realized everyone was here for the same reason. Being a musician is a family business from my brother, my father, and to my uncle legendary country singer George Jones. In 2009, I was asked to do a small role in a horror film called Albino Farm the Movie.
This got me back on the I want to be an actor kick. I was living in Kansas City at the time working as a financial consultant for a large brokerage firm when I started getting other low budget film roles. I decided in 2016 that if I was going to get back into acting, I should take it seriously and become all in. I moved back to Hollywood January of 2016 and hasn’t looked back since.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
This has not been a smooth ride not at all. I know I have a lot of work that will continue for the remainder of my acting career. Being disabled it’s hard to be called in for auditions for roles other than horror and disabled roles which is far and few between.
I would like to be considered for roles such as a lawyer, Doctor, or even someone in finance which is what I did for a period of time. But because the inclusion movement hasn’t gotten around to the disabled community yet. Most disabled actors are not being taken seriously. Which is something I am also working to change?
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
Paul Ford has appeared in such films as, A Field Guide to Evil, Albino Farm, and Ashes to Immortality. As a comedic actor, Paul was co-writer and producer of the series “Midget Mafia of KC” and received the UCB scholarship, as well as his accolades.
A disability activist and wants to change the way the film industry includes many other talented disabled actors, The summer of 2018 Paul turned to fellow actors and industry leaders to create what is now “ Time to Start Booking PWD.”
His goal is to help provide other disabled actors with some of the costs of being an actor. The purpose of his bimonthly events is to make sure that when a disabled actor is given the opportunity to audition that actor brings their “A” game
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
The only thing I would have done differently. I would have studied acting at a younger age.
