Meet Nick Koff of Santa Monica

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Koff.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Berry Lee Shoes started out as a shop where you could buy high-end, imported Brazilian leather shoes and boots. It soon evolved into a venue for high-quality, European comfort shoes. And that’s what it has stayed for the last 30 years.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Recessions, pandemics and more recessions have taken their toll. In financial terms, all of our struggles can be traced back to corrupt government practices, which we have no control over. And then, of course, there was the devastating loss of Margrit Koff, who built Berry Lee Shoes into the community treasure it is, after she was cut down in her prime by a terminal illness. Six years later, we are still trying to maintain the quality of service and caring that she was known for, if somewhat less perfectly.

As a small, ‘mom and pop’ brick and mortar store, we can’t compete with the department stores with their endless sales or the internet suppliers who relentless offer discounts in their efforts to put all small, local businesses out of business. I am repeatedly told that we are the last Euro-comfort shoe store on the west side. Everyone else has gone out of business for a reason. We would like to remain open for the forseeable future. That will be up to you.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We try to maintain inventories of beautiful, comfortable shoes and bags for people who won’t accept mediocore quality. We are proud to offer this level of products in a world that seems to be trying to win a race to the bottom in terms of goods and services. And we love it when our customers love what they get.

Berry Lee Shoes has been on Main Street in Santa Monica since 1992, serving up top quality European comfort footwear, bags, hats and hosiery to our local community and visitors for almost thirty years.

Our policies are simple: We only offer the finest quality products and we make sure they will fit your foot comfortably or we won’t sell them.
