Meet Nancy Marriott of Whittier

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Marriott.

Hi Nancy, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am probably the least likely person you’d expect to be in this role, yet looking back, I can clearly see how every part of my life prepared me for it. I was shy, insecure, and avoided conflict, so becoming the Executive Director of a nonprofit was never part of my plan. Still, I’ve always had a deep compassion for those facing hardship, and that calling ultimately outweighed every fear and obstacle.

Stepping into the role of Executive Director at Come to Him Ministries has been one of the most fulfilling decisions of my life. Walking alongside others and offering not only practical support, like housing, but also emotional and spiritual guidance is incredibly rewarding. There is truly nothing else I would rather be doing.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The journey has been surprisingly smooth overall. That’s not to say it has been easy or without its challenges, but through every step I have clearly seen God’s guidance and grace. In the nearly five years I’ve been in this role, I’ve learned so much—and I know there is still so much more ahead to learn.

One of the greatest challenges we face is preparing our residents to move into independent living in a time when rent has become overwhelmingly expensive. For many, affording housing feels nearly impossible. One way we hope to address this challenge is by purchasing our own facilities. If we were able to do so, the fees residents currently pay toward rent could instead be placed into a savings account and returned to them upon move-out—providing much-needed financial stability as they begin life on their own. This remains an ongoing goal and a challenge we continue to work toward with faith and perseverance.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Come to Him Ministries is a local nonprofit dedicated to guiding individuals through personal crises that have led to homelessness and helping them transition into a Christ-centered life. Through our programs, resources, and individualized services, we strive to provide the care and support each person needs to move forward, overcome homelessness, and reach their full potential.

Residents may stay with us for up to a year, during which they are provided a safe, stable place to live while working toward personal goals. Throughout their time with us, we offer meaningful community, spiritual guidance, practical support, and connections to licensed therapists—along with many other resources. While the journey is often marked by both highs and lows, no one walks it alone.

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I am not a risk-taker, yet risks are inevitable, aren’t they? I consider myself someone who takes time, thinks things through, and seeks wisdom before making big decisions. Often, in that process, the right path becomes clear. Other times it doesn’t, and I’m left deciding whether to step forward despite the uncertainty.

Not being a risk-taker can feel safe, but I’ve come to realize it can also mean missing out on meaningful opportunities. Because of that, I try to surround myself with people who offer perspectives different from my own—voices that help me see beyond what feels comfortable and into what might be possible.
