Meet Mythodical Joe of Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mythodical Joe

Hi Mythodical, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Well, I had always been in the arts, starting as a little kid. I did my first play at 7 years old playing Martin Luther King. And I excelled in drama in an after-school theater program in grade school and high school. But, the music came as a surprise. I was a very shy kid growing up. But even as a kid I was very good with writing. Poems, short stories etc. Too shy to speak to girls directly, I would use poetry as an introduction. As I got older and more into music and hip hop. Those same poems got put to different beats.
In 2005 I began working on my first raw, “out of the trunk” album titled, Two Sides II Every Story under the then pseudonym
Small Money, (being I was a broke rapper Lol) released in 2007, I sold about a thousand copies independently and even had a sit down with an A&R from Capital Records. Although they liked the content, they said the production needed work and asked me to come back with a better product. Discouraged, I kind of took a break from music for about 10 years.
Fast forward to about 2017 and listening to my daughter rave about commercial hip hop was just the fire I needed lit under me to begin writing and recording again. In 2019, under the new name Mythodical Joe, I began working on a new project, titled Something to Say, a conscious album dealing with many issues that were going on in that time frame. The album was released digitally on all platforms March of 2024. Still learning the promotional side of things it didn’t do great but it didn’t do bad either. Currently working on an EP titled The Collective, six tracks working with six different artists from across the U.S. that project is scheduled to be released summertime of this year. I am simultaneously working on the next full album titled Relationship Status, a more personal R&B and hip hop album.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Lol not even close. Honestly the biggest challenge is a budget and getting heard. The days of putting your music out on social media and having the thousands of “friends” like and/or share it or long gone. Now, these algorithms stand in the way and you have to pay companies to now navigate the matrix. And of course you need funds to do just that. It sucks as an indie artist because you have so many ideas and things you want to do for your project but unless you have thousands of dollars to throw behind it, you’re stuck just making music, putting it out there, fingers crossed that somebody of importance here is it and wants to give you a shot.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Well again, I’m working on a 6-track EP entitled “The Collective” featuring six artists from across the U.S. The first track off the EP titled “Hailstorm” was released December 27th of last year and the video was released January 24th of this year.

I would say what sets me apart is my age and experiences. They give me a perspective that younger artists might not have, and that depth really shows in my music.

My commitment to my craft and to preserving the old-school era of hip-hop, I think. sets me apart in an industry where a lot of artists are chasing trends.

My authenticity and dedication through my lyricism and storytelling speak volumes, and that’s something people can connect with.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I am very much a risk taker. I believe nothing in life can truly happen if you’re not prepared to throw the dice. My theology is, either it’s going to work, or it’s going to be a fun story to tell. I don’t think that I would be where I am today, without the risks that I’ve taken in either just leaving the house or deeper, within choices I’ve made with my music.
