Today we’d like to introduce you to Moon.
Hi Moon, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was born and raised in the Bronx, NY. Growing up as a quiet kid, I used art as a means to express myself. I learned art would guide me to express energy that could not be put into words. I used to people-watch with my siblings when I was young. We would guess people’s stories as they would pass by. It wasn’t long after I picked up my first camera and used my lens to help tell other’s stories. My camera helps me break the monotonous storylines and open up dialogues of beauty standards.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Social media has changed the standards of photography by bringing upon unrealistic expectations of beauty. These expectations impact creative freedom of the artist. As an artist I want to challenge these standards and what the norm of the industry is. For instance, I tend to have clients ask me to alter their body shape in extreme manners. Personally, it is not something I find ethical; I don’t want to conform to the notion of one-size-fits all.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in portraits. One thing I am good at is helping people pose. As a queer artist, I do play with idea of masculinity and femininity in my art. Working with concepts adds playfulness to my work.
Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
