Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Porjes.
Hi Michelle, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I am a native Los Angelino! I grew up in Ladera Heights and was educated in a variety of learning settings, including public, private, independent, and parochial schools. I attended UCLA, where I majored in Psychology, and spent weekends and summers working as part of the leadership for Camp Ramah in California.
After college, I moved to Denver, Colorado, where I earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology at the University of Denver. I spent two years in Denver working with individuals and small groups on remediating a variety of academic and behavioral challenges. I finished my formal education at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Florida, where I earned a Master’s and Specialist degree in School Psychology. While there, I gained valuable experience in working with students on assessing learning, emotional, and behavioral difficulties, as well as facilitating social skills and anger management groups.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
This is a great question! I would say I was definitely traveling on a paved road, but there were places where the road was bumpy, and a few potholes along the way.
A major pothole I hit was right after college, where my father was diagnosed as with liver cancer. He passed in the summer before my sophomore year. It definitely was a bumpy road for a while, but eventually, the road evened out.
Graduate school was definitely bumpy at times–sometimes super bumpy but I learned a lot both inside and outside the classroom. The bumpy road helped me make a commitment to myself around how I was going to treat others.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I was an administrator in a private, parochial school for 23 years, where I was the Director of Student Services. I saw that things were going in a different direction, so I decided to pivot.
I opened my own practice where I specialize in helping individuals manage their time, stuff, and information. I also help experienced educators set up tutoring and educational support businesses that thrive.
Lately, I have been doing a lot of educator coaching, where I focus on helping educators of all levels (administration, teachers, teaching assistants) increase engagement in the school in general and the classroom in particular.
I think what sets me apart from others is I am “relentless”. I go after what I want in a very driven and methodical way. I use a lot of social media to tell my story and strategies. I have an Amazon storefront where I share the tools, I use to help learners maximize their success, and I have two e-books on Amazon that have all the techniques and strategies I use to help others with executive functioning.
I am most proud of…well…all of it! 🙂
Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
