Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Nakamoto.
Michelle, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was found in China, adopted by Japanese Americans, but told I look Filipino.
Many people come into this world knowing two things: their birthday and their background. I won’t ever know either.
IG @nakamobro just started out as a fun lil game: Maybe my favorite foods can help me guess my ethnicity.
Food is the bridge between worlds…..and I love flirting with the idea of not being American
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Part of me wishes the road would get smoother. Food blogging -while also being an actor, comedian, and podcaster- makes my schedule super unpredictable and my budget even smaller. Solo dining limits me the most. But I’m still able to explore distinct regional dishes from around the world within the deeply historical neighborhoods of LA. Recently on a streetfood kick.
What else should our readers know?
I know what you should eat after audition, on a budget! I also obsess about what it’s like Not having a birthday on my podcast ‘ERROR 404: Birthday Not Found’.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Someday I’ll be able to afford to travel to these countries and experience each region’s food and cultural traditions. Maintaining traditions isn’t practical, but being a vessel for storytelling so we can embrace other ways of eating, praying, and loving is important to me. Also, I’d love to afford to eat at Bavel.
