Meet Michael Hiller of Hiller Enterprise in Woodland Hills

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Hiller.

Michael, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I guess my story initially began when I came back to California. I have a communications degree with emphasis in Business from the University of Arizona. When I got back from Arizona, I started working for Bank of America’s corporate office, where I dealt with countrywide cases of bankruptcy, evictions and forecloses. This ignited a curiosity in me to learn more about real estate. I ended up taking my broker’s license test and obtained it with a few months of studying.

However, a few months after I received my broker’s license, I was laid off from Bank of America. It was such an unsettling time for me because I was not sure what path I would be on or what was next for me since I had no job. One day, I woke up and asked myself how do I find security in the industry? That was the moment I decided to attend the Accounting program from UCLA extension.

I come from a finance background family as both of my parents are C.P.A.s so it seems as life would have it I to would be intrigued by the accounting world. After I was done with the extension program, I started working with a Top 25 accounting firm and I realized that something was missing in the industry. I realized that there was a lack of connection with millennials and I thought well what can I do to make sure this connection is made? What can be done for millennials to have a better understanding of what accounting is and how the finance world is not just numbers and paying taxes. So I decided to start my own business.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road to where I am at has not been an easy one but it has made the journey to the destination a memorable and life learning experience. Well first of all while I was starting the business, I still had to find work because I was still in the initial state of starting it up. This was proven to be extremely difficult as it was during the same time the recession hit. I was going from one job to another and handing my resume out left and right. It was really frustrating because there wasn’t really any job security for anyone during the recession and it made starting my business seem as a dream that would not be reached.

I was also faced with an unexpected situation that hit home for me as my mother was diagnosed with cancer. It was a tough time for the whole family as she has always been the strong one and neck of the family. It took a toll on me emotionally because I felt powerless like there wasn’t anything I could do to make her better. I decided to put a pause on what I thought I needed to help her. I began spending more time with her and eventually ended up working at the office with my dad and her. Thankfully, she got better and my experience working with them helped me gain more knowledge and understanding of the tax world.

I thought that with the experience I’ve gained and by working with them, I would finally be able to take my dream out of the back burner and start it up again. Since the economy was doing better and I had just endured a lot I didn’t think anything else would happen to detour me from my destination. I was again thrown into a state of confusion as I received news of my diagnosis of Crohn’s disease. It was something that never crossed my mind and at that moment, the processing of finding this out took a lot of energy out of me. I had to change my whole lifestyle in order to stay in remission and not end up in the hospital.

This time I told myself I would not put my dream in the back burner. I was going to change my lifestyle but at the same time, push through and work on my dream. I stayed working with my parents, gaining more knowledge and experience and as time went by I slowly started the process of creating Hiller Enterprise.
