Today we’d like to introduce you to Melanie Ulceus.
Hi Melanie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Since I was a little girl, I was always invested in some form of entertainment. School plays, church drama, praise dance, and choir – my parents made sure I was heavily involved.
At 13, I remember watching a ton of ANTM and ripping out pages of my older sister’s magazines (sorry Mia). I was hooked on the glamorized lifestyle and my fascination with modeling grew. Day in and day out, I put effort into visualizing myself walking down the runway or being on billboards and print ads.
At 17, I was too focused on making my dream of being a model come true. After I graduated from high school, I attended an open call for a major modeling agency in NYC. I had a feeling they would like me, and they did, so my modeling journey began.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Modeling is not a smooth road. It takes much more personal development and patience to grow yourself in this industry. My first year after being signed, I was dropped, I got discouraged for six years – so I dabbled in other fields trying to keep up. I felt lost because I attached my identity to being a model. I had a hard time trusting those who I felt could lead me back to this career. Money also became problematic because modeling is not cheap. Whether you are signed or not, you have to invest in yourself and your network in order to make the best of your career. If you really want this to work it will. However, everything takes time.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am still actively a model, however wellness influencing and travel content creation has taken more interest. I keep a comedic yet peaceful demeanor and I love sharing that to my community at Travelstylecreative. I’m most proud of all the brands I’ve gotten to work with, and I know what sets me apart is I’m real. Who you see online is who you will get in person.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
If you’re a creative in this online space – please find time to remember yourself. Be true to who you are and stay committed to your values. It’s too easy to get caught up in the lies we see online. Stay in your own lane and the right opportunities will come for you.
