Meet Meghan Hui of Null Modular

Today we’d like to introduce you to Meghan Hui

Meghan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Null Modular began with a clear intention: to explore the convergence of sound creation and design, specifically blending modular synthesis and interior spaces. I come from an architecture background; my good friend was getting into modular synthesizers, and asked me to build him a case to house his synth modules. He loved it, and this ultimately became our first retail product: the n-1 modular synthesizer case. The case was conceived as a flat-packable, sustainable solution for housing modular synthesizer modules, balancing both form and function. Designed to fit into creative spaces, it quickly gained traction in music studios and the modular community for its playful yet sophisticated aesthetic. I’m passionate about both design and music, and saw an opportunity to contribute something new to the modular synthesizer community.

With the growing interest in modular synthesis worldwide, we realized that the connection between the functional tools musicians use and the spaces where creative work happens was often overlooked. This sparked the studio’s core mission—merging sound engineering with modern design principles. The n-1 very much emerged from this philosophy.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has definitely been a journey to get here! I’ve had to move shops three times, each time having to start projects over and reconfigure fabrication machines and methods. Over the past several years I’ve gone from having a fabrication shop in downtown Los Angeles to partnering with a fabricator in Orange County, then shifting from in-house CNC to more CO2 laser-focused fabrication. After going back and forth between Costa Mesa and Los Angeles, I’ve now consolidated everything back into my workshop in Highland Park, with a focus on 3D printing. None of this was particularly easy, but it’s all provided me with a broad set of skills — both as a designer and fabricator, but also as an entrepreneur and businessperson.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Null Modular?
Our vision for Null Modular is to create calming, focused tools and environments for people to explore sound, mindfulness, and creative work overall. Our target audience thus far has been both professional and hobbyist synthesizer users: everyone from in-demand composers for film and television, to bedroom producers who create and explore solely for themselves and the people around them. We believe that creativity is a powerful tool to foster and maintain mental health, and our products are designed to be part of this journey.

We strive to thoughtfully balance function with a design sensibility that’s minimal, playful, familiar and a bit peculiar. We are a women and minority owned business. There’s a rich history of women composers working with synthesizers, but not many women or people of color developing the tools and instruments for electronic music creation. We aspire to help bridge that gap, and share the possibilities of music technology.

Despite having to start over many times, by persevering we’ve seen our products in the hands of musicians who appreciate them — these have been my proudest moments. Applying skills and ideas that evolved from my background in architecture to create thoughtfully-designed music gear has been an unexpected gift. We enjoy listening to musicians talk about how they work, and trying to find the best solutions for them. We think it’s why details matter so much to us: a lot of tools in the music world are focused on general function with little regard for form, rather than being tailor-made for musicians.

Our approach to every project is that the details make the whole. We want people to see it, and feel the love and consideration that went into making it. Similar to how music can evoke emotion, we want our products to do the same. To give someone an undeniable feeling — that’s the motivation and a huge measure of success for us.

The n-1 case has become a cult favorite among musicians and designers from Los Angeles to France. Since then, we’ve expanded beyond our original synth-focused audience with new products like the Duster Buddy Brush and the Tilt Stand, both of which reflect our commitment to modular, versatile design. The Duster Buddy Brush, with its bamboo handle and plant-based, biodegradable stand, has a playful yet functional approach, perfect for keeping gear (and records, among other things) dust-free, while the Tilt Stand offers portability and adaptability for musicians and designers on the go.
These additions, along with the development of projection lighting and small speaker features, represent our vision of merging high-quality audio solutions with thoughtfully designed interiors. We continue to aim for products that appeal to a wider audience while maintaining our roots in the music technology space.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Over the next 5-10 years, I think the industry will shift towards more technology-integrated interiors, with wireless solutions and smart furniture becoming commonplace. Sustainability and circular design will gain prominence, pushing for modular, durable, and eco-friendly products. Customization and modularity will continue to rise, as consumers seek flexible, adaptable solutions for hybrid work and personal spaces. The audiophile and pro audio markets will expand, with more demand for high-quality sound in home setups. Lastly, experiential and immersive audio design, driven by things like AR/VR and spatial audio, will reshape how we experience sound in homes and entertainment spaces.
