Today we’d like to introduce you to Max Goldcamp.
Hi Max, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m originally from Pittsburgh and moved out to LA in 2015. I’ve been working in reality TV for the last 10 years and realized I can’t keep doing it. I began asking myself if I could do anything, what would it be, and decided it would be to own a venue. I couldn’t afford it, but I do have a backyard, so I decided to turn that into my venue in the meantime. I started Sunday Funday Hollywood a little over a year ago, and it has only increased in size every month. It’s a mini festival where I book up comedians, musicians, vendors and have a bunch of fun activities. Turns out all my years in casting and talent coordinating have given me the skills I needed to pull something like this off, and I have big plans to take this out of my yard and into the heart of Hollywood.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No venture worth doing should be a smooth road. I had big confidence issues going in, and serious doubts anyone would even show up to my events. At first, I had to borrow everything for my setup and had a very loose show structure. I was a long-winded host full of self-doubt and would even forget to introduce myself! But like they say, the more you do it, the better it gets. Every month, my confidence and abilities grow, and now the backyard is packed every show. We have a super solid structure, and people keep coming back again and again, always bringing new friends with them. I want to make events my full-time gig, but I still have to find work as a freelancer so pulling it off every month can be very nerve-racking. We always get there and put on the best event we can. I absolutely adore the community we’re building. It’s full of the kindest and most supportive people I’ve ever had the pleasure of meeting.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I take care of talent on set, and I think I’m one of the best in the business. I get requested by talent to come back season after season. One of my favorite moments was when I was requested by a talent to be their coordinator on their main show after working with them for one day while they were a guest judge on another show. It means so much to me to have a talent trust. I take my duties very seriously. The world of TV can be brutal, especially reality tv, where the days are packed and 12 hours is the minimum. I enjoy being the calm in the storm and the person that enables talent to get through the work.
Before we go, is there anything else you can share with us?
Sunday Funday Hollywood takes place the first Sunday of the month and is completely free, although donations are appreciated. I hand-make Sunday Funday branded shirts and hats that I sell and raffle off every month to help offset the costs. I keep it a free event because I care about fostering a community for people to support the amazing local talent we have all over LA, not to mention inflation is killing us all right now and some free entertainment goes a long way! I hope everyone who reads this will check out the event and join the awesome community we’ve been building. Check us out at @sundayfundayhollywood on Instagram
