Meet Mat Cipher of Mat Cipher

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mat Cipher.

Mat, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was born and raised in Budapest, Hungary, classically trained in music from the age of five. I play guitar and piano, and was in an alternative rock band named “Walrus In The Sunshine”, and performed at Sziget Festival in 2016. Shortly after that, I moved to Los Angeles to further pursue my musical aspirations, specifically the art of music production.

In 2018, I met Manu Beker through some CalArts contacts, and that led to me dropping my album “Dominoes” a year later. Manu sang and co-wrote the last two songs on the EP, “Astral Travel” and “Lie”, and sang on the lead single, “Dominoes”. The EP was mastered by Grammy-winning industry veteran Randy Merrill, known for working with artists like Kygo, and Dave Kutch, who mastered for example The Weeknd’s latest album. The remix pack of the album came out shortly after in 2020 featuring remixing artists who were supported by David Guetta and Martin Garrix.

Later in 2020, I released a new single “By My Side”, co-written and sang by my friend Manu Beker and mastered by Mike Marsh, known for working with Calvin Harris for example. The song is a last reminder of summer’s everlasting nights and yearning hearts, with a chill, and laid-back vibe, accompanied by a unique music video featuring EA’s iconic “The Sims 2” game. The video even got to The Sims team and they shared it on their social media pages as a throwback since millions of people grew up playing The Sims 2.

I am very happy and fulfilled with all the progress I’ve made and extremely blessed with new friends and amazing people, but I feel the best is yet to come.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Well, I think the road to recognition & accomplishment is never an easy one, particularly in this industry, in fact if you are serious about it, it’s a never ending one. Deciding to take this path was never a question, as I love what I do, but admittedly there were some rough patches and speed bumps along the way. At the very beginning, many people didn’t take me and my ambitions seriously, and often I felt alone, especially after moving to a new continent without knowing anyone. Of course, these are all hurdles one must overcome, and will never stop to better myself and bring the best to people who enjoy my music.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think success is a byproduct of people following something that they truly believe in and never give up. I was just recently talking about this with a friend of mine and this is what I told him: I do believe that we cannot evolve and be better without failure and challenges. Obstacles are illusions making us think we are trash, but it’s the opposite; it is a sign that moving out of our comfort zone is the way to move forward. Without these obstacles and anxiety, we would not be able to acknowledge what we are capable of. Moreover, success is created under smart and hard-working individuals that unify as a team. Being in a team is crucial since there will always be others who know something you don’t, and they don’t know something that only you have knowledge and skills about.
