Today we’d like to introduce you to Mary-Kate FitzPatrick.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My earliest childhood memories are mostly filming chaotic stop-motion movies with my siblings and our Dragon Ball Z action figures. By nine, I’d mastered Windows Movie Maker (rest in peace), and by twelve I’d signed up for Video Production in middle school just to be in class with my sister.
For a long time, I never thought being on camera was an option for me. I’d watch Miss USA and admire how confidently beautiful the contestants were. Cut to a few years later, after (mostly) surviving high school and finding myself at Mount Saint Mary’s University, I realized that confidence and capability actually go hand in hand. Our motto, “all of which woman is capable,” still echoes every time I walk onto a set.
I eventually started blending both sides of the lens: producing and performing. I booked a job modeling for a global Benefit Cosmetics campaign, used the paycheck to buy my first Canon 7D, and slowly started collecting gear from prize winnings (thank you, Miss Teen California, for the $10K and my 5D Mark III).
After earning my Bachelor of Science in Film, Media & Social Justice, I worked every production job under the sun: producer, editor, production assistant, casting, talent- before landing at MotorTrend Studio, where I got to make automotive television. From there, I dove into ad agency life, post-producing spots for brands like Nissan, Amazon, and Bacardi, and now I’m a Video Editor for Abercrombie & Fitch Co.
Fashion and film coming full circle will always be so wild to me. I still can’t believe this is my real life- but I stay curious, keep learning, and try not to take myself too seriously. (Except when media goes offline. Then it’s personal.)
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There have definitely been challenges. This industry, like many others, can be so tough. I’ve had to make decisions that prioritized my emotional safety and wellbeing, even when it meant stepping away from opportunities that didn’t feel right. Protecting your peace isn’t a weakness, it’s a strategy. And sure, there’s nepotism and favoritism, things completely out of my control. But what I can control is my integrity. I simply cannot see myself trading the bumpy road for someone else’s shortcut.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
On paper (or the internet, rather) you will find I’m known for being Sr. Post Producer of MotorTrend Original Programming, my work as Video Editor for Abercrombie & Fitch Co, field producing, and some pretty cool on camera work. What I would like to be known for is much bigger than television- I am an unconditional friend, sister, daughter, and colleague. That’s a legacy I would like to leave in a world where the majority of our existence is conditional to what we have to offer.
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
I’m proud that I’ve never compromised who I am just to make other people comfortable. It’s not always the easiest route, but it’s kept my friendships, collaborations, and career moments authentic and real.
I take pride in valuing people over projects. Of course deadlines matter- but at the end of the day, we might not remember what was delivered on a random Tuesday. We remember the person who stayed calm, cracked a joke, and made those around us feel capable when things got chaotic. I’ve seen firsthand that kindness under pressure doesn’t slow a team down- it makes them unstoppable.
What matters most to me is creating space- for women, for underrepresented voices, for anyone who’s been overlooked. I stand by widening the table, in lifting people up so they can see they belong there. I care about leading with empathy, about making the kind of impact that lasts long after the cameras stop rolling. The truth is, what’s meant for you doesn’t need to be forced or chased- it finds you when you’re standing in your purpose. And when you do, what is meant to be will not pass you by.
