Today we’d like to introduce you to Marlyssa Binns.
Marlyssa, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Growing up with parents that were both great singers, I was exposed to some awesome talent at an early age. As a young adult, I was drawn to creative individuals who would later become my friends. It became normal for some of them to invite me to their studio sessions. I looked at it as if I was experiencing their creative process. In 2011, the desire to start a production studio brewed within me. I had no direction and no idea what to do next. Time went by and in 2014, I woke up from a dream that was so vivid, I had to write about it. Until then, I’ve never written a script, so this was very foreign to me. The unction to write was so strong, I had no other choice other than to write it out.
In 2017, I was laid off from a temporary job in the healthcare industry. They called me in the office and said “we don’t think you are happy here.” and they let me go. Truth is, I was not happy there. Once I arrived home, I became upset. I was upset that someone could have the power to determine my quality of life. That very night I picked up my pen and began writing again. That was the birth of FavHer Productions.
Over the years and through much trial, error, wrong partnerships, and betrayal; the people who I thought were my friends proved to be enemies. I’ve learned that some people are only drawn to you because they see something in you. They want to know how they can benefit from you; so they stay close enough to reap the fruit of your labor. Inwardly they are really snakes, people with hidden agendas that will lead to your demise if you aren’t careful. There are only a few who truly want to see you succeed. The Journey has taught me that the only one who is really going to bring my vision to pass is me. The wrong people showed their true colors and we parted ways. The right people would be connected to me at the right time.
When that epiphany hit me, I began to gain more momentum. People and companies working on independent projects began reaching out to work with me. Interestingly enough, my goal of building a production studio shifted with the onset of COVID-19 in March 2020. Knowing a digital front needed to be fully developed prior to any physical building; the idea of a multi-media streaming platform that also represented the creative came about. This platform isn’t just about streaming a movie or a television show; it’s about representing the painter, the opera singer, social media influencer, the podcast show, all creatives would potentially have an opportunity to display their work. We are in the first phase of introducing our platform. The progress and growth that I have experienced up until now has been amazing. Stay Tuned for the next phase.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has been very challenging and is not for the faint of heart. One of the biggest challenges is of course obtaining the financial backing, especially for a black and woman owned business. My personal income from my day job has fully funded everything about this business. The finances that it takes to build a solid foundation for a business is almost overwhelming. The innate desire within me takes over on days when I wonder if all the sacrifices I have made will be worth it. Branding, marketing and establishing the appropriate online presence has also been difficult. I see why people seek help by outsourcing.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about FavHer Productions – what should we know?
FavHer Productions isn’t your typical production company. Ideas of amazing stories drop on me out of nowhere. I am inspired by things that others usually take for granted. This prompts me to write or at least jot the idea down until I can develop it. We believe in the power of a team and providing the correct information to help them reach the next level. I believe in collaborating with others for the development and production of their projects. Now, with the launch of our new platform, we are hoping to be able to bridge the gap many creatives face after having a great idea. An idea is great but what guidance do most creative individuals really have to accomplish their dream? Many waste time, money and sometimes their actual projects get stolen from people in this industry. What sets us apart from others is our desire to help the independent artist succeed. Our heart is for the underdog, that creative that has been at it for years and refuses to give up. The Age of Acts, the name of our platform will be a house for the creative in this new age.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
The ability to be knocked down but not stay down, that characteristic is vital. I have experienced many lows but none of them stopped me from remembering that the struggle is a part of the journey. Being able to embrace resistance will be another great quality that is essential to success. Many will hear no, face rejection, or even be told they don’t have what it takes. A real artist must be able to face situations like these and keep pressing forward. Persistence during resistance can cultivate an epic finish.
